70's Hunt's Spaghetti Sauce With Meat image

This recipe has been my standard for pasta and lasagna. I've never found another like it and it seems that many people haven't since I lost it and tried on here, Hunt's website, and many, many other places to find it again. I'm posting it here so it won't get lost again. If you are into canning, make a bunch. Give this sauce time to thicken. It's even better the next day!

Yield Makes about 12 cups

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 Vidalia or other sweet onions, peeled, very coarsely chopped
6 garlic cloves, peeled
2 tsp. dried oregano
4 (28-oz.) cans whole peeled tomatoes
4 tsp. kosher salt, plus more
1 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper, plus more

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium. Cook onion and garlic, stirring occasionally and being careful not to let brown, until aromatic, about 3 minutes. Add oregano and stir to combine. Using your hands, crush tomatoes and add to pot along with juices; season with 4 tsp. salt and 1 1/2 tsp. pepper.
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until sauce is reduced slightly, about 1 hour. Remove from heat and blend with an immersion blender until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Do Ahead: Sauce can be made 5 days ahead. Store in an airtight container and chill, or freeze up to 6 months.

Tips:

  • To save time, use jarred or canned spaghetti sauce instead of making your own.
  • If you're using fresh tomatoes, be sure to peel and seed them before chopping.
  • You can use any type of ground meat in this recipe, such as beef, turkey, or chicken.
  • If you don't have any Italian seasoning, you can substitute a mixture of dried oregano, basil, and thyme.
  • Serve the spaghetti sauce over your favorite pasta, such as spaghetti, linguine, or penne.

Conclusion:

This easy spaghetti sauce recipe is a delicious and versatile dish that can be used for a variety of meals. It's perfect for a quick and easy weeknight dinner, or it can be served at a special occasion dinner party. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a flavorful and satisfying meal that the whole family will love.
