HOT TURKEY SANDWICHES (FOR LEFTOVER TURKEY)

Hot Turkey Sandwiches (For Leftover Turkey) image

This uses left-over chopped turkey. We grew up calling these "turkey burgers"- but that was before ground turkey, so I'm calling them "turkey sandwiches" to avoid any confusion. WE LOVE THESE. They were a favorite with my family when I was growing up, and now they are a favorite with my hubby and kids. Something nice and different. The melted cheese and mayo together are just heavenly. I like my cheese cut up in fairly large cubes, not diced. Adjust the onion to your taste. We look forward to thanksgiving left-overs just for this! FOR OAMC: leave out the mayo and freeze remaining ingredients (expect buttered buns) in an airtight bag with all of the air removed. Let thaw in fridge before adding mayo.

Tips:

  • To make your sandwiches even more flavorful, use a variety of condiments and toppings. Some popular choices include cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and coleslaw.
  • If you're using leftover turkey that is already cooked, be sure to heat it through before assembling your sandwiches. You can do this in the oven, on the stovetop, or in the microwave.
  • If you're using leftover turkey that is not already cooked, you will need to cook it before assembling your sandwiches. You can roast a whole turkey in the oven, or you can cook turkey breasts or thighs in a slow cooker or on the stovetop.
  • For a classic hot turkey sandwich, use white bread or rolls. However, you can also use other types of bread, such as wheat bread, rye bread, or sourdough bread.
  • If you're looking for a healthier option, you can use whole-wheat bread or rolls instead of white bread. You can also use low-fat mayonnaise or yogurt instead of butter.

Whether you're looking for a classic sandwich or something a little more creative, you're sure to find a recipe that you'll love.
