Time 15m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 quarts filtered apple juice
1 1/2 cups brewed black tea, such as english breakfast
1 1/2 cups apple brandy such as calvados
8 cinnamon sticks

Steps:

  • Boil apple juice in a 4-5 quart heavy pot over high heat until syrupy and reduced to 1 1/2 cups, about 50 minutes.
  • Combine apple syrup, tea and Calvados in a 2 quart saucepan and heat over moderate heat until hot (do not boil).
  • Divide toddy among 8 small cups and serve with a cinnamon stick in each.
  • Note: the apple syrup can be made 1 week ahead and cooled completely, uncovered, then chilled, covered.

Tips:

  • Choose the right tea: For a classic hot toddy, use a black tea like English Breakfast, Earl Grey, or Assam. You can also experiment with other types of tea, such as green tea, white tea, or herbal tea.
  • Use fresh ingredients: The fresher the ingredients, the better your hot toddy will taste. Use fresh lemon juice, honey, and ginger for the best results.
  • Don't boil the water: Boiling water can destroy the delicate flavors of the tea. Instead, heat the water to just below boiling, around 180-190°F (82-88°C).
  • Steep the tea for the proper amount of time: The steeping time will vary depending on the type of tea you're using. Follow the package directions for the best results.
  • Add the honey and lemon juice to taste: Start with a small amount of each and add more to taste. You can also add a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor.
  • Serve the hot toddy immediately: Hot toddies are best enjoyed when they're hot. Serve them in a mug or heatproof glass with a slice of lemon.

Conclusion:

A hot toddy is a delicious and soothing drink that can help you relax and unwind. It's also a great way to warm up on a cold day or soothe a sore throat. Experiment with different types of tea and flavors to find your perfect hot toddy recipe. Cheers!
