HOT PORK SANDWICH DINNER !

Hot Pork Sandwich Dinner ! image

Hot Pork Sandwich Dinner ! Yep! That is what I said! This is a meal that is common in the area of the country where I live. It is made with pork, beef, chicken or turkey (I love them all and they are all basically made the same way and assembled the same way). This delightful comfort food is sold in most "mom and pop" type...

Steps:

  • 1. Cook your pork roast as desired (keep in mind that this works with turkey, chicken, and beef too). Remove from roast pan. Let rest and cool.
  • 2. Slice the meat thin.
  • 3. Prepare your potatoes: wash, trim, and cut up (no need to peel). Put in pan and cover with water. Boil potatoes until done. Mash the potatoes and add butter, milk and salt to you liking. Or just mash the potatoes.
  • 4. Put the gravy mixes, cornstarch and 1/2 cup of water in a bowl, stir well. Bring the pan drippings, spices and veggies to a boil along with the remaining water. Stir mixture in bowl, and slowly add to boiling mixture. Cook until thickened. Add desired amount of the sliced meat to the gravy. Turn off the heat and just let the meat heat through and soak in the gravy.
  • 5. Cook or heat your vegetables.
  • 6. To assemble the Hot Pork Sandwich Dinner: Place a slice of bread on a large dinner plate. Put some of the pork and gravy on the slice of bread. Place the second slice of bread on top of meat and gravy layer. Put more meat and gravy on top of the second slice of bread. Add the third slice of bread. Cut sandwich on a diagonal and separate the two halves to make room for the mashed potatoes.
  • 7. Cover the top of the cut sandwich and the mashed potatoes with meat and gravy.
  • 8. Add vegetable of choice (I did whole kernel corn).

PULLED PORK SANDWICHES

Pulled Pork Sandwiches image

This recipe takes a good deal of time, but it yields a lot of sandwiches, more than enough for a sloppy, spicy dinner party feast. You'll roast a dry-rubbed pork shoulder in the oven until it's pull-apart tender, 3 or 4 hours that you can spend doing other things while your kitchen fills with the aroma of the cooking meat. Then you'll assemble a quick slaw and simmer a tangy barbecue sauce for about 10 minutes before putting it all out on the table with soft rolls. Serve the combination warm, at any time of the year, for a weekend project well worth an afternoon's work.

Time 6h

Yield 8 to 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 28

1 1/2 teaspoons whole coriander seed
1 1/2 teaspoons whole cumin seed
1 1/2 teaspoons black peppercorns
2 1/4 teaspoons coarse kosher salt
1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard powder
1 1/2 teaspoons chile powder
3 tablespoons dark brown sugar
3 1/2 pounds boneless pork shoulder
Hamburger or brioche buns, for serving
1 1/2 cups ketchup
1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons molasses
2 garlic cloves, minced or grated
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons sweet or hot paprika
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
Pinch of cayenne
Dash of hot sauce, more to taste
1 small head green cabbage, outer leaves removed, shredded (about 1 1/2 pounds)
1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
1 large jalapeño, seeded if desired, thinly sliced
3/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt
Black pepper

Steps:

  • Assemble the spice rub for the pork: In a dry, small skillet over medium-low heat, toast coriander, cumin and peppercorns until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle, grind toasted spices into a fine powder. Transfer to a bowl and mix with salt, mustard powder, chile powder and sugar.
  • If your roast is tied up, untie it. Massage meat generously with spice rub. If you have time, let meat rest for an hour or two at room temperature, or refrigerate for several hours or overnight.
  • Heat oven to 300 degrees. Place pork in a baking pan and roast for 3 to 4 hours or until meat is pull-apart tender and internal temperature reads 200 degrees on a meat thermometer. Let meat cool for at least 30 minutes before pulling it apart and shredding with your hands or two forks. (This works best when the meat is warm but not hot.)
  • Prepare the barbecue sauce: Combine ingredients in a medium pot. Simmer over medium-low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce has deepened in color. Season with more hot sauce if you like. Add two-thirds of the sauce to meat and toss to coat, adding more sauce as needed. (Any leftover sauce will keep for at least 2 weeks in the refrigerator.)
  • Make the slaw: Combine cabbage, onion and jalapeño in a large bowl. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper. Add dressing to cabbage and toss well.
  • Serve pulled pork with slaw, buns and hot sauce on the side, letting people assemble their own sandwiches.

PHILLY (ITALIAN STYLE) HOT ROAST PORK SANDWICHES

PHILLY (Italian Style) Hot Roast Pork Sandwiches image

Philly is not only famous for cheesesteaks. Another famous favorite is Hot Roast Pork Sandwiches! After searching the web for the recipe and not finding it, I came up with this and the results were fabulous and authentic tasting. This is also delicious served as a main dish instead of for sandwiches...you may want to slice it thicker and add a side dish or two :)

Time 1h35m

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 -3 1/2 lbs boneless pork roast
salt
fresh coarse ground black pepper
garlic powder
basil
italian seasoning or pizza seasoning
dehydrated dried garlic
water
10 -12 Italian rolls (or you can use French bread if Italian rolls are not available in your area, you want a crusty roll,)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Place pork roast in a baking dish (I use a 9 x 13 inch glass pyrex dish).
  • Sprinkle generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder, basil, Italian seasoning and garlic flakes.
  • Roast in oven for about 15 minutes or until juices start running and fat starts to melt and brown in the bottom of the pan, then add water to about 1/2 inch up the pan.
  • Check every half hour or so and if water gets low, add a bit more to so it's about 1/2 inch up the pan every time.
  • Each time you add the water, pour some over the roast, so the top does not get too dry.
  • Roast until internal temperature reads 165-170 degrees (About an hour and a half TOTAL cooking time).
  • Trim all visible fat from roast and discard.
  • Slice roast very thin, in the pan if possible, so you don't lose any juices.
  • If all goes well, the juices/gravy at the bottom of the pan should look golden brown, with darker flecks of spices, garlic and some little pieces of meat.
  • Serve slices of pork on rolls, making sure that the slices have soaked up some of the juices (you can drizzle more juices on top, if you like, or you can thicken the gravy with water and cornstarch or flour, if desired).
  • Enjoy!

ABSOLUTELY ADDICTIVE ROAST PORK SANDWICHES

Absolutely Addictive Roast Pork Sandwiches image

A local pub serves these super simple, amazingly tasty Roast Pork Sandwiches. They are sort of a local legend. Making a pork roast just for these sandwiches is a breeze, but this is a great way to use any leftovers from a roast. The pepper jack cheese adds a zip and the dipping "gravy" is what ties it all together. The trick is slicing the pork and the cheese very thin. Enjoy, as the juicy goodness drips down your chin.

Time 2h5m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 lbs pork roast
sea salt
freshly cracked pepper, to taste
3 tablespoons butter
1 (1 ounce) package mccormack au jus mix
3 1/2 cups water
1 lb monterey jack pepper cheese, sliced thin
French bread (or any type of rolls with a crust that is not super crusty) or Italian bread (or any type of rolls with a crust that is not super crusty)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees farenheit.
  • Sprinkle pork roast with salt and pepper and place on a rack in a roasting pan.
  • Roast for two hours or until temperature of center of pork registers 150-160 degrees (145 degrees is the new "safe" temp for pork.).
  • Melt butter over roast while it is still in the roasting pan.
  • Remove roast from pan, saving the drippings and juice.
  • Add Au Jus mix and water to drippings and cook according to directions on package.
  • Place bread in the oven (which has been turned off just after the roast is done) and let it crisp a bit. The heat will help to melt the cheese better than just the heat of the meat will.
  • Let roast cool for about 10 minutes, then slice thinly.
  • Pile pork and cheese on bread while meat is still hot.
  • Serve with Au Jus dipping gravy on the side and LOTS o' napkins.

Tips:

  • To make the pork tender and juicy, use a pork shoulder or pork butt roast. These cuts have a good amount of fat that will help keep the meat moist during cooking.
  • Brown the pork shoulder on all sides before braising it. This will help develop flavor and color.
  • Use a flavorful braising liquid, such as chicken broth, beef broth, or apple cider. You can also add vegetables, herbs, and spices to the braising liquid for extra flavor.
  • Cook the pork shoulder on low heat for several hours, or until it is fall-apart tender. This will allow the flavors to develop and the meat to become very tender.
  • Serve the pulled pork on hamburger buns with your favorite toppings, such as coleslaw, barbecue sauce, or pickles.

Conclusion:

Hot pork sandwiches are a classic American comfort food that is perfect for a weeknight meal. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. With a little planning, you can have a delicious hot pork sandwich dinner on the table in no time.
