EASY-PEASY GLUHWEIN (HOT GERMAN SPICED WINE/AKA "MULLED CIDER")
This is the super-easy version of Gluhwein. Don't waste space in the pot with fruit. The spices and heat will add a whole new level to the sangria! This is always a big hit at my Christmas parties! You can use 1 whole orange peel in place of the whole lemon peel, if desired.

RED CHRISTMAS PUNCH (HOT MULLED CIDER)
We make this every Christmas, and it's a favorite with friends and family. Sometimes I vary the juices - you can use cranberry instead of cherry, or cranapple juice instead of apple cider.

HOT MULLED CIDER
Steps:
- Pour apple cider into a 3-quart saucepan, cover, turn the heat on medium-high. While cider is heating up, take a vegetable peeler and peel away a couple thick strips of peel from the orange. Press about half of the cloves into the peeled part of the orange. (You can also just quarter the orange and add the slices and cloves separately. I just like seeing the orange bob up and down.) Place orange, orange peel strips, the remaining cloves, and the rest of the ingredients into the sauce pan with the cider. Keep covered and heat the mulled cider mixture to a simmer and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 20 minutes on low heat. Use a fine mesh sieve to strain the hot mulled cider away from the orange, cloves, and other spices. If you want, you can add a touch of bourbon, brandy, or rum to spike it up a bit. Serve hot. Add a cinnamon stick to each cup if desired.
Tips:
- Select the best cider: Choose a high-quality apple cider with a rich, full flavor. Freshly pressed cider is ideal, but store-bought cider will also work.
- Use a variety of spices: The classic spices for mulled cider are cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. However, you can also experiment with other spices, such as ginger, cardamom, or star anise. Feel free to adjust the amount of each spice to suit your taste.
- Don't boil the cider: Bring the cider to a simmer over medium heat, but do not boil it. Boiling the cider will cause the alcohol to evaporate and will also make the cider taste harsh.
- Garnish with fresh fruit: Sliced apples or oranges are a classic garnish for mulled cider. You can also add a cinnamon stick or a star anise pod for a festive touch.
- Serve hot: Mulled cider is best served hot, but it can also be served chilled. If you are serving the cider chilled, be sure to chill it thoroughly before serving.
Conclusion:
Mulled cider is a delicious and festive drink that is perfect for the holiday season. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With its warm, inviting flavor and aroma, mulled cider is sure to be a hit at your next holiday gathering.
