Yield Serves 2

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 tablespoon mayonnaise
2 teaspoons Dijon-style mustard
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh dill
1/2 pound mushrooms, sliced thin
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 slices of rye bread, toasted
2 thin slices of cooked ham
2 thin slices of Swiss cheese
1/2 small red onion, sliced thin

Steps:

  • In a small bowl whisk together the mayonnaise, the mustard, the dill, and salt and pepper to taste. In a skillet cook the mushrooms in the oil over moderately high heat, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes, or until the liquid the mushrooms give off is evaporated, and remove the skillet from the heat. On a baking sheet spread one side of each slice of toast with half the mayonnaise mixture, top each toast with a slice of the ham, half the mushrooms, a slice of the Swiss cheese, half the onion, and salt and pepper to taste, and broil the sandwiches under a preheated broiler about 4 inches from the heat for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and browned lightly.

Tips:

  • For the best results, use high-quality ham and Swiss cheese. Look for ham that is thinly sliced and has a mild flavor. Swiss cheese should be firm and have a slightly nutty flavor.
  • If you don't have a panini press, you can use a regular skillet or griddle. Just be sure to press down on the sandwiches with a spatula so that they get evenly toasted.
  • Feel free to get creative with your fillings. You can add other ingredients to the sandwiches, such as bacon, avocado, tomato, or arugula.
  • Serve the sandwiches immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch dressing or honey mustard.

Conclusion:

Hot ham and Swiss cheese sandwiches are a quick and easy meal that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They're also a great way to use up leftover ham. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make a delicious and satisfying sandwich that the whole family will love. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give these hot ham and Swiss cheese sandwiches a try.
