Time 1h10m

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 hot dog (such as Ballpark)
1 hot dog bun
4 slices of American cheese

Steps:

  • For the hot dog: Preheat a gas grill, griddle, or grill pan on high heat. Place the hot dog on the grill and keep a watchful eye on it, rolling it so that it rotates every 30 to 45 seconds. Remove once the hot dog is cooked all the way through.
  • For the melt:On the same hot grill, place the open hot dog bun inside-down on the grill until golden brown before flipping. Place slices of American cheese on the inside of the bun (which is now face-up); slice the grilled hot dog and place pieces on top of the cheese. Carefully close the bun, which contains both the cheese and sliced hot dog. Using a large spatula or spoon, press entire sandwich down so that it flattens and the cheese begins to melt. After a minute or two, flip over sandwich and repeat on the other side. Once both sides of the bun are toasted and the cheese is viscous, remove the melt from the grill.

Time 20m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon brown sugar
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 package hot dogs, such as Hebrew National Jumbo Beef Franks
1 package cocktail franks
4 hot dog buns
1 package hot dog buns
One 8-ounce package liver mousse
Whole grain mustard, to serve
1 package brown-and-serve dinner rolls

Steps:

  • Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat and add the onions. When the onions begin to soften, add the sugar and season with salt and pepper. Turn the heat to low and cover the pan. When the onions just begin to brown, remove the cover. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the onions are a dark brown color. Be careful not to let them burn. Set aside.
  • Melt 2 more tablespoons butter in same skillet over medium heat. Cut several shallow slashes across the hot dogs and add them to the pan. Fry until they are cooked through and nicely browned. Set aside and keep warm. Add the cocktail franks to the pan and fry until they are cooked through and nicely browned. Set aside and keep warm.
  • Melt 2 tablespoons butter in another pan and set aside.
  • Add the remaining 2 tablespoons butter to the skillet. Split open the hot dog buns and toast them in the buttery juices. Spread a thin layer of mousse inside both halves of each bun. Top with a hot dog and pile on the onions. Add a few dollops of mustard and serve.
  • Split the dinner rolls down the middle and spoon on some of the melted butter. Stuff in 2 of the cocktail franks and spread on some mousse. Top with some onions and mustard and serve.

BUNSTEADS, A.K.A. HOT TUNA MELTS

Bunsteads, a.k.a. Hot Tuna Melts image

An old recipe, from an old friend, Jayne ... these are very filling and cheesy-gooey. Great with a side-salad for a Saturday night, sit-in-front-of-the-TV-type meal!

Provided by Terrie Hoelscher

Categories     Tuna Salads

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/4 lb velveeta cheese, cut into tiny cubes
3 hard boiled eggs, chopped
5 1/2 oz can of tuna
2 Tbsp chopped bell pepper
2 Tbsp chopped green olives
2 Tbsp chopped bread and butter pickle
2 Tbsp finely diced onion
1/2 c mayonnaise
6 hot dog buns, white or wheat

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 250° while mixing the filling.
  • 2. Combine all ingreds [except hot dog buns!] in a bowl. Mix lightly.
  • 3. Split buns, and fill them with the tuna mixture.
  • 4. If you buy your hot dog buns in a box, return the filled buns to the box in which they came. OR, wrap each filled bun in aluminum foil. Wrap kind of loosely, so the filling doesn't stick to the foil. You can wrap them all in one huge piece of foil, if that's the way you prefer to do it.
  • 5. Place boxed or foil-wrapped buns in the oven at 250°. Cook for about 30 minutes, until filling is hot, and the cheese is bubbly and melted. Serve right away, while hot.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the hot dog melt will be. Choose a good quality hot dog, cheese, and bread.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When cooking the hot dog melts, don't overcrowd the pan. This will prevent them from cooking evenly.
  • Cook the hot dog melts until the cheese is melted and bubbly: This will ensure that the hot dog melts are cooked through and the cheese is gooey.
  • Serve the hot dog melts immediately: Hot dog melts are best served immediately after they are cooked. This will ensure that the cheese is still melted and the bread is still crispy.
  • Get creative with your toppings: There are many different toppings that you can add to your hot dog melts. Some popular choices include ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, and pickles.

Conclusion:

Hot dog melts are a quick and easy meal that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are perfect for a casual lunch or dinner, and they can also be served as an appetizer or snack. With a few simple ingredients, you can create a delicious and satisfying hot dog melt that everyone will love.
