HONEY BUTTERMILK CORNBREAD

Honey Buttermilk Cornbread image

I wanted to make corn bread but didn't have sugar or milk. I did have buttermilk and honey. They seemed to work well. I guessed at how much honey would be needed and it seemed about right, not too sweet.

Time 35m

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup cornmeal
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup oil
1/3 cup honey

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. and grease a 8 inch square baking pan.
  • Sift the cornmeal, flour, baking powder and salt together.
  • In a seperate bowl mix the egg, buttermilk oil and honey.
  • Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients.
  • Beat until smooth.
  • Pour into pan.
  • Bake 20 minutes edges may start to brown a little.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cornmeal: For the best texture and flavor, use a medium-grind cornmeal. Coarse-grind cornmeal will result in a grittier bread, while fine-grind cornmeal will produce a denser bread.
  • Use buttermilk: Buttermilk adds a tangy flavor and helps to tenderize the bread. If you don't have buttermilk on hand, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter will result in a tough bread. Mix the batter just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the bread in a hot oven: A hot oven will help the bread to rise and develop a golden brown crust.
  • Let the bread cool before serving: Let the bread cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. This will help the bread to set and develop its full flavor.

Conclusion:

Honey buttermilk cornbread is a delicious and versatile bread that can be served with a variety of meals. It's easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like it sweet or savory, this bread is sure to please everyone at the table. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy bread recipe, give honey buttermilk cornbread a try.
