2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
1-1/2 cups warm 2% milk (110° to 115°)
3 large eggs, room temperature
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon salt
7 to 7-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 large egg yolk, room temperature
2 tablespoons water
Sesame seeds

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add milk, eggs, butter, sugar, salt and 3 cups flour; beat on medium speed until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. , Turn dough onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, 1-1/2 to 2 hours. , Punch down dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide into 6 portions. Roll each portion into a 14-in. rope. For each loaf, braid 3 ropes together on a greased baking sheet; pinch ends to seal and tuck under. Cover with kitchen towels; let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 50 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°., Beat together egg yolk and water; brush over loaves. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake until golden brown, 30-35 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.

6 to 7 c all purpose flour
2 pkg active dry yeast
2 c whole milk
1/4 c granulated sugar
1/4 c butter
2 tsp salt
3 large eggs

Steps:

  • 1. In a large mixer bowl combine 3 cups of the flour and the yeast. In a saucepan heat milk, sugar,butter and salt until warm (115^)and butter is almost melted; stir constantly. Add to flour mixture; add eggs,one at a time. Beat at low speed of electric mixer for about 1/2 minute; scraping bowl.Beat 3 minutes at high speed. Stir in as much remaining flour as you can mix in with a spoon.
  • 2. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead in enough remaining flour to make a semi-stiff dough this is smooth and elastic about 6 minutes. Shape into a ball. Place in a lightly buttered bowl; turn once to butter surface. Cover; let rise in a warm place till double- away from draft- about 1 1/4 hours.
  • 3. Punch down; divide dough in half. Cover; let rest 10 minutes. Shape into 2 loaves. Place in 2 sprayed 9x5x3-inch loaf pans. Cover; let rise till nearly double about 35 minutes.
  • 4. Bake in a 375^ oven for 35 to 40 minutes or till done, covering with foil the last 15 minutes to prevent over browning. Remove from pans; cool on a wire rack. Slice thick toast and butter or garlic butter. Enjoy with your favorite breakfast, or luncheon sandwich.
