HOMEMADE BREAKFAST CEREAL

Homemade Breakfast Cereal image

Breakfast cereals are so expensive, I wanted to see if I could make my own. This is a variation of a recipe I found in a book called "More-with-less Cookbook". I've made granola before but this recipe is a little different. I haven't decided yet if I love it - just posting it here to check on the nutritional information.

Time 50m

Yield 6 cups, 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup unsweetened flaked coconut
1 cup quick oats
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
2 tablespoons sunflower seeds
2 tablespoons pepitas
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients well. Spread on a baking sheet and toast in 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally until browned.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of grains: Don't limit yourself to just one type of grain. Experiment with different grains like oats, wheat, rice, and quinoa to create a more nutritious and flavorful cereal.
  • Add nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds are a great way to add extra protein, healthy fats, and fiber to your cereal. Try adding almonds, walnuts, pecans, sunflower seeds, or chia seeds to your bowl.
  • Use fresh or dried fruit: Fresh or dried fruit adds a natural sweetness and extra vitamins and minerals to your cereal. Try adding berries, bananas, apples, raisins, or cranberries to your bowl.
  • Add spices and extracts: Spices and extracts can add a unique flavor to your cereal. Try adding cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, or vanilla extract to your bowl.
  • Sweeten it naturally: If you want to add a little sweetness to your cereal, use natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar. Avoid refined sugar, which is unhealthy and can cause inflammation.

Conclusion:

Making your own breakfast cereal is a great way to start your day with a healthy and delicious meal. With a little creativity, you can create a cereal that is tailored to your own taste and dietary needs. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy breakfast, reach for your homemade cereal instead of a store-bought box. Your body will thank you for it!
