Honorable Mention - Contest Recipe 2007! Bake a warm and cozy fruit dessert bar using cookie mix and pie filling, ingredients already in your cupboard.

2 pouches (1 lb 1.5 oz each) Betty Crocker™ sugar cookie mix
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 eggs
1 can (21 oz) cherry pie filling
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon milk
1/4 teaspoon almond extract

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Spray bottom and sides of 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray.
  • In large bowl, stir base ingredients until soft dough forms. Press half of dough in bottom of pan.
  • Spread pie filling over dough. Drop remaining dough by teaspoonfuls over filling.
  • Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 10 minutes.
  • In small bowl, stir glaze ingredients until smooth. If necessary, add additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until thin enough to drizzle. Drizzle glaze over warm bars. For bars, cut into 6 rows by 4 rows. Store covered at room temperature.

1 c sugar
1 stick butter
1 egg
1/2 c orange juice
2 1/2 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
1 c candied fruit
1 c raisins
1/2 c chopped walnuts
( some use less raisins than walnuts)

Steps:

  • Mix together the sugar,butter and 1 egg Add the OJ and mix in. In a separate bowl mix flour, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, and baking powder. Then add sugar to mixture. Work in candied fruit, raisins and walnuts Form into 2 balls and roll each into 1/2 " thick pieces Cut into 4" strips. Bake 25 to 20 min at 350.
