Yield Serves 4

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 vanilla bean, split in half lengthwise
1 Thai chile, split in half lengthwise
4 (3-inch) strips orange zest
1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers or 24 hibiscus tea bags
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
Thin lime wheels (for serving)

Steps:

  • Scrape vanilla seeds into a medium saucepan; add pod, chile, orange zest, hibiscus, sugar, and 2 cups boiling water. Let steep until infusion cools to room temperature, about 30 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a large bowl, pressing on solids. Stir in lime juice and 2 cups cold water; chill agua fresca 1 hour.
  • Divide agua fresca among ice-filled glasses. Garnish with lime wheels.
  • Do Ahead
  • Agua fresca can be made 3 days ahead. Cover and chill.

Tips:

  • Choose fresh hibiscus flowers for the best flavor. Dried flowers can also be used, but they will not be as vibrant in color or flavor.
  • If you can't find hibiscus flowers, you can use hibiscus tea bags. Just brew the tea according to the package directions and then use it in place of the hibiscus flower infusion.
  • Add more or less sugar to taste. You can also use honey or another sweetener if you prefer.
  • Chill the agua fresca for at least 2 hours before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld and the drink to become refreshing.
  • Garnish the agua fresca with a slice of lime or a hibiscus flower for a festive touch.

Conclusion:

Hibiscus agua fresca is a delicious and refreshing drink that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. Whether you are looking for a healthy alternative to sugary drinks or a fun and festive beverage for a party, hibiscus agua fresca is a great choice.
