HOMEMADE CRISPY SEASONED FRENCH FRIES

Homemade Crispy Seasoned French Fries image

My family loves French fries and with 4 children the bag fries from the store just weren't enough and became too expensive. So I tried batter - after all it makes chicken, shrimp, and onion rings crispy so why not potatoes. Now even my husband can't get enough of these French fries. They even stay crispy when you reheat in the microwave.

Time 25m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 ½ pounds russet potatoes, peeled
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon onion salt
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon paprika
½ cup water, or as needed
1 cup vegetable oil for frying

Steps:

  • Slice potatoes into French fries, and place into cold water so they won't turn brown while you prepare the oil.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. While the oil is heating, sift the flour, garlic salt, onion salt, (regular) salt, and paprika into a large bowl. Gradually stir in enough water so that the mixture can be drizzled from a spoon.
  • Dip potato slices into the batter one at a time, and place in the hot oil so they are not touching at first. The fries must be placed into the skillet one at a time, or they will clump together. Fry until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes: For the best French fries, use starchy potatoes like Russet or Idaho potatoes. These potatoes have a high starch content, which helps them to become crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
  • Cut the potatoes evenly: To ensure that the French fries cook evenly, cut them into uniform-sized pieces. This will help them to cook at the same rate.
  • Soak the potatoes: Soaking the potatoes in cold water for 30 minutes before frying helps to remove excess starch and results in crispier fries.
  • Season the potatoes: Before frying, season the potatoes with salt, pepper, and any other desired herbs or spices. This will add flavor to the fries.
  • Fry the potatoes in hot oil: The ideal temperature for frying French fries is between 325°F and 350°F. This will help them to cook evenly and become crispy.
  • Drain the potatoes on paper towels: After frying, drain the French fries on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Serve the potatoes immediately: French fries are best served hot and crispy. Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce or seasoning.

Conclusion:

Herbed French fries are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or side dish. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a batch of crispy, flavorful fries that everyone will love. So next time you're looking for a tasty treat, give these herbed French fries a try. You won't be disappointed!
