HEAVENLY PUMPKIN PIE SPICE

Heavenly Pumpkin Pie Spice image

This mix comes closest to my favourite store-bought pumpkin pie spice. Because I like to use it so often, I buy the individual spices in the bulk food section, then mix up a jar of it. Its less expensive than purchasing the little tins of name-brand spice mix, and you can stir up as little as or as much as you like at one time.

Time 2m

Yield 2/3 cup approx.

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 tablespoons cinnamon
2 tablespoons ginger
2 tablespoons nutmeg
1 tablespoon allspice
1 tablespoon clove

Steps:

  • Simply stir these spices together well and store in a small airtight jar or old spice container that will hold about 6 oz.
  • Sprinkle some onto your coffee grounds before you start the coffeemaker every morning -- it lends a wonderful aroma.
  • You can also mix this with some white sugar, as you would cinnamon-sugar, to sprinkle on your buttered toast etc.
  • Use it in any sweet baking -- its heavenly!

Tips:

  • Choose the right pumpkin: Look for a sugar pumpkin or pie pumpkin, which are small and have a deep orange color. Avoid using a carving pumpkin, as it is too watery and will not produce a good pie.
  • Roast the pumpkin: Roasting the pumpkin intensifies its flavor and makes it easier to puree. To roast the pumpkin, cut it in half, scoop out the seeds, and place it cut-side down on a baking sheet. Roast at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour, or until the pumpkin is tender.
  • Make sure the pumpkin puree is smooth: Use a food processor or blender to puree the roasted pumpkin until it is very smooth. If the puree is too thick, add a little bit of milk or cream.
  • Use fresh spices: Ground spices lose their flavor over time, so it is important to use fresh spices when making pumpkin pie spice. You can find fresh spices at most grocery stores.
  • Don't overmix the pie filling: Overmixing the pie filling will make it tough. Stir the ingredients together just until they are combined.
  • Bake the pie until the crust is golden brown and the filling is set: The pie is done baking when the crust is golden brown and the filling is set. You can check to see if the pie is done by inserting a toothpick into the center of the pie. If the toothpick comes out clean, the pie is done.

Conclusion:

Pumpkin pie spice is a versatile spice blend that can be used in a variety of recipes, from pies and cakes to cookies and breads. It is a delicious way to add a warm, autumnal flavor to your favorite dishes. With these tips, you can make your own pumpkin pie spice at home and enjoy the delicious flavor of pumpkin all year long.
