Categories     Main Dish

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breast (or thighs), diced into 1″ cubes
2 Tbsp. cornstarch (or arrowroot)
1 1/2 Tbsp. gluten free tamari (or soy sauce or coconut aminos)
1-2 Tbsp. Avocado oil
1/2 cup water
3 Tbsp. gluten free tamari (or soy sauce or coconut aminos)
2 Tbsp. pure maple syrup or honey
1 Tbsp. rice vinegar
1/2 tsp. toasted sesame oil (or more, to taste)
1 clove garlic, finely minced
1/2 tsp. minced fresh ginger
pinch red pepper flakes (optional)
1 Tbsp. cornstarch or arrowroot
1 Tbsp. water
1 tsp. sesame seeds

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl or container, combine diced chicken with 2 Tbsp. cornstarch and 1 1/2 Tbsp. tamari. Toss with a fork to coat well.
  • In a medium skillet, heat 1 Tbsp. avocado oil over medium-high heat.
  • Working in batches, add chicken pieces to the pan (they shouldn't be touching) and cook 3-4 minutes on the first side and 1-3 minutes on the second side to cook through. (They should be fully opaque and have no pink inside).
  • Remove cooked chicken to a clean plate and repeat with remaining chicken until add chicken is cooked, adding more oil to the pan as needed.
  • In a bowl or liquid measuring cup, combine water, tamari, syrup or honey, vinegar, toasted sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using). Whisk to combine.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together 1 Tbsp cornstarch with 1 Tbsp water to make a cornstarch slurry.
  • When the chicken is fully cooked, reduce the heat in the pan to medium-low.
  • Add cornstarch slurry to the sesame sauce mixture and whisk to combine (it'll now look a bit milky).
  • Pour sauce mixture into the warm pan and whisk over medium-low heat 3-5 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling, thickened, and more translucent. (You should start to be able to see the path of your whisk in the sauce).
  • Return cooked chicken to pan and coat with the sauce. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve warm!

HEALTHY SESAME CHICKEN

Healthy Sesame Chicken image

This is my all-time favorite low-fat, low-cal recipe. I got it from a great cookbook, More Healthy Homestyle Cooking, and I have to say that this recipe is worth the price of the book! For more crunch and color, you can cook some red pepper and trimmed snow peas for 4 minutes in the skillet before adding the chicken. I like it just the way it is, though, served over rice. Enjoy!

HEALTHIER HONEY-SESAME CHICKEN

Healthier Honey-Sesame Chicken image

This is a 'healthier' version of honey-sesame chicken. It is baked instead of fried and the chicken is not battered, making it healthier. All the flavors are here and the only thing sacrificed are the calories! Serve over rice with additional sauce on the side.

HEALTHY SESAME CHICKEN

Categories     Chicken Breast

Time 1h

Yield 4 , 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

12 ounces boneless skinless chicken breasts
3 tablespoons light soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon mirin (Japanese sweet cooking wine) (optional)
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons sesame seeds, any variety
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 pinch of dry chili flakes

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350. Cut the chicken breasts in half.
  • Place chicken in a shallow dish and pour soy sauce and Mirin over the chicken. Turn the chicken over to thoroughly coat.
  • Combine the seeds, flour, pepper and chili flakes in a bowl. Mix well. Place the chicken in the dry mixture and turn over to coat completely.
  • Spray a baking dish with non-stick spray. Place coated chicken in the dish. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until done, uncovered.
  • Remove the pan from the oven and serve immediately.

Tips:

  • Prep before cooking: To save time and ensure even cooking, make sure to slice the chicken thinly and evenly before cooking. You can also prep the vegetables and sauce ingredients ahead of time.
  • Use a large skillet or wok: This will allow you to cook the chicken and vegetables in a single pan, preventing overcrowding and ensuring that everything cooks evenly.
  • Cook the chicken in batches: If you're cooking a large amount of chicken, cook it in batches to prevent overcrowding and ensure that it cooks through. Remove the cooked chicken from the pan and set aside while you cook the remaining batches.
  • Don't overcook the chicken: Sesame chicken is best when the chicken is cooked through but still tender and juicy. Overcooking will make the chicken dry and tough.
  • Make sure the sauce is thick and glossy: The sauce is what makes sesame chicken so delicious, so make sure it's thick and glossy. If the sauce is too thin, add a cornstarch slurry (equal parts cornstarch and water) to thicken it.
  • Serve immediately: Sesame chicken is best served immediately after it's cooked, while the chicken is still hot and crispy and the sauce is still glossy. You can garnish with sesame seeds, green onions, or chopped peanuts for extra flavor and texture.

Conclusion:

Sesame chicken is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that's perfect for a quick and healthy meal. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of prep, you can have a restaurant-quality sesame chicken dish in the comfort of your own home. So next time you're looking for a tasty and satisfying meal, give this sesame chicken recipe a try!
