TOO MUCH CHOCOLATE CAKE

Too Much Chocolate Cake image

I am posting this for safekeeping as it is our family's favorite cake recipe. It is very similar to a few others here on Zaar but IMO it's the best! :) The mini chips don't sink to the bottom, but regular chips will do just as well. I prefer to bake this as cupcakes as opposed to a bundt cake. Fantastic with vanilla buttercream frosting or just a dusting of powdered sugar. Edited to add: Thanks, Yooper and Ronnie for remiding me where I found this! I used to copy recipes from online onto index cards for my recipe box (before I found Zaar). So much for my "safekeeping" theory. lol

Time 55m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 box devils food cake mix
1 5.9 oz instant chocolate pudding
1 c sour cream
2 c semisweet chocolate chips
1 c vegetable oil
4 eggs, beaten
1/2 c warm water

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 12 cup bundt pan with Pam and set aside.
  • 2. In a large bowl, combine cake and pudding mixes, sour cream, oil, beaten eggs, and water. Stir in chocolate chips and pour into prepared pan.
  • 3. Bake 50-55 minutes or until top is springy to the touch and a wooden toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely in pan at least 1 1/2 hours before inverting onto a plate. If desired, dust cake with powdered sugar before serving.

Tips:

  • Opt for dark chocolate: Dark chocolate contains a higher percentage of cocoa solids, which are rich in antioxidants and have less sugar than milk chocolate or white chocolate.
  • Use healthier sweeteners: Instead of refined sugar, try using natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or stevia. These sweeteners provide a healthier alternative with lower glycemic index.
  • Replace butter with healthier fats: Instead of butter, use healthier fats like coconut oil, avocado oil, or Greek yogurt. These fats are rich in nutrients and can help reduce the overall saturated fat content of the cake.
  • Incorporate healthy ingredients: Add nutrient-rich ingredients like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to the cake batter. This can increase the fiber, vitamin, and mineral content of the cake.
  • Reduce the serving size: Be mindful of portion control. Eating a smaller slice of cake can help manage calorie intake and prevent overindulgence.

Conclusion:

Indulging in chocolate cake can be a pleasurable experience, but it's important to make mindful choices to create a healthier version. By following these tips, you can enjoy a chocolate cake that is not only satisfying but also provides some nutritional benefits. Remember, moderation is key, and occasional treats can be part of a balanced diet. Experiment with different healthier ingredients and techniques to find your perfect balance of taste and well-being.
