HARD BOILED EGG - THE EXACT RECIPE

Hard Boiled Egg - The Exact Recipe image

Many men need to know precisely how to make a hard boiled egg. If they have an electric cook top, this is for them. I used a timer and marked each each with a number, then took them out at various times to find which was the best, and what the range of time you have is before the egg gets over cooked.

Steps:

  • 1. Fill a pot with cold water and put 7 eggs in, cover, then place on an Electric Cook Top (mine was Kenmore). Turn on to high for exactly 6 minutes, 40 seconds.
  • 2. Turn dial down to low, and let cook for 1 minute, 20 seconds, so you're at 8 minutes total.
  • 3. Turn the stove off, uncover the pot, and let eggs sit for 8 minutes in the water. The result is what you see in the photo. If you only cook for 7 minutes, it will be somewhat soft-boiled. Do not go past 10 minutes in this step, or the egg white will start to disintegrate. Put in cold water for 10 minutes to cool down before peeling shell. So, the total time from cold water to finished product is 16 minutes.

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 1

6 to 12 large eggs

Steps:

  • Add the eggs to a saucepan and cover with water: Fill a saucepan about a quarter of the way with cold water. Place the eggs in a single layer at the bottom of the saucepan. Add more water so that the eggs are covered by at least an inch or two of water. The more eggs that are crowding the pan the more water you should have over the eggs. 6 eggs should be covered by at least an inch, 7 to 12 eggs, 2 inches.
  • Bring to a rolling boil: Leave the pan uncovered. Turn the heat to high and bring the water to a rolling boil.
  • Turn off the heat, cover, and let sit: Depending on how cooked you like your hard boiled eggs, the eggs should be done perfectly after sitting for 10-12 minutes. That said, depending on your altitude, the shape of the pan, the size of the eggs, and the ratio of water to eggs, it can take a few minutes more. Or if you like your eggs not fully hard cooked, it can take a few minutes less. When you find a time that works for you, given your preferences, the types of eggs you buy, your pots, stove, and cooking environment, stick with it. I also find that it is very hard to overcook eggs using this method. I can let the eggs sit, covered, for up to 15-18 minutes without the eggs getting overcooked.
  • Strain and run under cold water: Strain the hot water from the pan, careful not to dump out the eggs, and run cold water over them until they are cool to the touch. This will stop the eggs from cooking further and make them easier to peel. Or, if you are cooking a large batch of eggs, remove them with a slotted spoon to a large bowl of ice water. Let them sit for a few minutes, or until cooled.
  • Peel or store for later: I find it easiest to peel the eggs under a bit of running water. The best way to store hard boiled eggs is unpeeled in a covered container in the refrigerator. Eggs can release odors in the fridge which is why it helps to keep them covered. They should be eaten within 5 days. Peeled eggs should be eaten within a day or two. Did you love this recipe? Give us some stars below! The good thing about this method is that even if you forget and the eggs sit in the water a few minutes longer than you had planned, they'll still be fine. Some people like their eggs less or more hard cooked than others. If you want your eggs still a little translucent in the center, let them seep in the hot water for only 6 minutes or so.

Yield 1 dozen eggs

Number Of Ingredients 1

  • Place your eggs in a pot and cover with cold water by 1 inch. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then cover, remove from the heat and set aside 8 to 10 minutes. Drain, cool in ice water and peel.
  • Bring a pot of water to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, then add your eggs and cook 4 to 5 minutes. Drain, cool in ice water and peel.
  • Bring a pot of water to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, then add your eggs and cook 7 to 8 minutes. Drain, cool in ice water and peel.

Tips:

  • Use older eggs: Older eggs have a thinner shell, which makes them easier to peel.
  • Start with cold eggs: Starting with cold eggs helps prevent the eggs from cracking when they are placed in boiling water.
  • Bring the water to a boil first: Do not place the eggs in the water until it has reached a full boil.
  • Gently lower the eggs into the boiling water: Use a slotted spoon or a kitchen utensil to gently lower the eggs into the boiling water.
  • Cover the pot: Cover the pot with a lid to help the water maintain a steady boil.
  • Cook the eggs for the proper amount of time: The cooking time will vary depending on the desired doneness of the eggs. For soft-boiled eggs, cook for 6-7 minutes; for medium-boiled eggs, cook for 9-10 minutes; and for hard-boiled eggs, cook for 12-13 minutes.
  • Transfer the eggs to an ice bath immediately after cooking: This will help stop the cooking process and make the eggs easier to peel.
  • Peel the eggs under cold running water: This will help loosen the shell and make it easier to remove.
