Tips for Perfect Ham Steaks with Apple Mustard Chutney

  • Choose Thick-Cut Ham Steaks: For a satisfying and filling meal, opt for ham steaks that are at least ¾ inches thick. This ensures they remain juicy and flavorful during cooking.
  • Brine or Marinate the Ham Steaks: Consider brining or marinating the ham steaks beforehand to enhance their flavor and tenderness. A simple brine of water, salt, and sugar, or a marinade made with olive oil, herbs, and spices, works well.
  • Cook the Ham Steaks Properly: Whether you plan to pan-fry, bake, or grill the ham steaks, cook them to an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) as recommended by the USDA. This ensures they are safe to consume and retain their natural juices.
  • Make the Apple Mustard Chutney Ahead of Time: The apple mustard chutney is a delicious accompaniment to the ham steaks. You can prepare it a day or two in advance, allowing the flavors to meld and intensify.
  • Serve the Ham Steaks Hot: Once cooked, serve the ham steaks hot with the apple mustard chutney spooned over them. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or chives for an appealing presentation.
