HAM HOCKS AND BEANS

Ham Hocks and Beans image

Comfort food at its best. Many people will tell you to soak your beans first (however, I have been told that you should soak dry beans when using a pressure cooker. Please follow manufactorers instructions in this case). I never do. I just wash them and cook them as below. For a really hearty winter meal, serve these with a loaf of hot fresh bread or a pan of corn bread and a pan of old fashioned crisp fried potatoes. These may also be made in the pressure cooker and crockpot.

GREEN BEANS AND HAM HOCKS

Green Beans and Ham Hocks image

It has been cold and snowing here. Just the right weather for soups and comfort food. These green beans and ham hocks are so good. They do not need any added spices or seasoning but you can add them if you desire. There is no need to add salt to these since the ham hocks/shanks are already salty. I am sensitive to pepper so I did not add any to these but you can if you want to. I just don't know how much to add. They can be served as a meal with cornbread or as a side dish with meat This can easily be turned into soup by adding other vegetables. Cook time varies according to your crockpot. When I lower my 3.5 quart crockpot to low, it does not boil or even simmer so I cook these on high the whole time. Stovetop method time is approximate. These smell so good while they cook.

Tips for Cooking Ham Hocks and Beans

1. Choose the Right Ham Hocks: Select meaty ham hocks with a good amount of meat on them. Avoid hocks that are too fatty or have a lot of skin. 2. Soak the Ham Hocks: Soaking the ham hocks overnight or for at least 4 hours helps remove excess salt and impurities, resulting in a milder flavor. 3. Use a Variety of Beans: Don't limit yourself to just one type of bean. Experiment with different beans like navy beans, pinto beans, or black beans to add a variety of textures and flavors to your dish. 4. Add Vegetables: Vegetables like carrots, celery, and onions add flavor and nutrients to the pot. You can also include other vegetables like potatoes, corn, or bell peppers. 5. Use a Slow Cooker: A slow cooker is a great option for cooking ham hocks and beans. It allows the meat and beans to cook slowly and gently, resulting in fall-off-the-bone tender ham hocks and flavorful beans. 6. Season to Taste: Don't be afraid to adjust the seasonings to your liking. Add bay leaves, thyme, or paprika for a more savory flavor. You can also add a touch of sweetness with brown sugar or honey. 7. Serve with Cornbread or Rice: Ham hocks and beans are traditionally served with cornbread or rice. These accompaniments help soak up the delicious sauce and complete the meal.
