Time 4h10m

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 pound pork hock ((also called ham hock) (or 2 cups cooked ham chunks))
36 ounces green beans (, fresh or frozen (in bite-size pieces))
3 cups water
4 large potatoes (, yellow or red, skin on, cut in bite-size chunks)
1 Tbsp thyme (, dry)
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
½ tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt (, more to taste)
¼ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp ground cinnamon
oil (, just a drizzle (about 1-2 Tablespoons))

Steps:

  • Add the ham hock (or ham chunks) to the bottom of the crock pot, then pour in the green beans, water, and potato chunks. Don't cut the potatoes too large, or they will have a hard time getting done when everything else is ready. I like to go for 1 inch or smaller.
  • Next, you will add the thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, cloves, and cinnamon. Mix together thoroughly, and then drizzle with a bit of oil (1-2 tablespoons) before covering.
  • Cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6-7 hours. This all depends on whether you'll be home or not and how quickly you need it to be done. Don't overcook, as the green beans will turn to mush. You do want the potatoes to get done, though.
  • Once the green beans and potatoes are cooked, you will remove the ham hock and let it cool a bit before dicing up the ham. Turn the crockpot on the warm setting while cooling and cutting up the ham pieces. Add the ham pieces back in and serve.

I make this dish often; I have never really measured the ingredients, but can give you a reasonable approximation. Note: Freeze leftover cooking liquid, and then add to bean soup, ham or cabbage dishes, or use to cook dumplings in. It's delicious!

HAM, GREEN BEANS, & POTATOES IN THE CROCK POT

Ham, Green Beans, & Potatoes in the Crock Pot image

Here's the simple crock pot combination I've come up with based on friends' advice and some other recipes I've read. I like to serve it with corn bread and sliced fresh tomatoes. NOTE: In the time since I originally posted this recipe, I've tweaked it a bit more when I make it at home. I found that the addition of some chicken broth really enhances the flavor! However, I'm leaving it here as originally posted.

Cottage ham is one of my favorite dishes to eat because it's rich in flavor and incredibly simple to make. Requiring only five ingredients and five minutes of prep time, this dish could quickly become a go-to meal in your household. If you can't wait the hour it takes to cook, drop it in a slow cooker in the morning, and it'll be ready when you get home.

GREEN BEANS WITH POTATOES AND HAM

Green Beans with Potatoes and Ham image

You can make the ham broth and shred the ham hocks a day ahead. The next day, reheat to simmering, and cook the potatoes and green beans.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Ingredients     Meat & Poultry     Pork Recipes

Time 2h

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 meaty ham hocks
1 onion, peeled and quartered through root
3 garlic cloves, smashed
1 celery stalk, cut into 2-inch pieces
3 sprigs fresh thyme
1 bay leaf
1 jalapeno or serrano chile, intact with a split down 1 side
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
3 1/2 quarts water
1 pound small red potatoes, halved
2 pounds green beans, stem ends trimmed, halved crosswise

Steps:

  • Combine ham hocks, onion, garlic, celery, thyme, bay leaf, chile, 3/4 teaspoon salt, and the water in a large pot. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat, and simmer, uncovered, 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Transfer ham hocks to a plate. Discard chile, and add potatoes to pot; simmer until just tender, 10 to 12 minutes.
  • When ham hocks are cool enough to handle, pull meat off bones (discard bones), shred into bite-size pieces, and return to pot. Add green beans, and return to a simmer. Cover, and cook until beans are just tender, about 8 minutes. Season with pepper. Serve vegetables and meat with a slotted spoon; reserve broth for another use. If storing leftovers, store in broth.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham. A bone-in ham will give your dish more flavor, but it will also take longer to cook. A boneless ham is a good option if you're short on time.
  • Soak the ham before cooking. This will help to remove excess salt and make the ham more tender.
  • Use a slow cooker liner. This will make cleanup a breeze.
  • Add your vegetables to the slow cooker along with the ham. This will help them to cook evenly.
  • Season the ham and vegetables with your favorite herbs and spices. This will add flavor to the dish.
  • Cook the ham on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-6 hours. The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the ham.
  • Serve the ham with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, green beans, or cornbread.

Conclusion:

Ham, green beans, and potatoes is a classic comfort food dish that is perfect for a family meal. It is easy to make and can be cooked in a slow cooker, making it a great option for busy weeknights. With a few simple tips, you can make a delicious and flavorful ham, green beans, and potatoes dish that your family will love.
