Instant Mashed Potato, Ham and Cheese Casserole image

Oh my gosh, this is the cheapest, quickest and tastiest main dish ever. We have this at least once a week. I like to brown my ham in butter before adding to casserole. It just makes the ham a little crisp. You will not be disappointed.

Categories     Breakfast

Time 40m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (26 ounce) bag frozen hash brown potatoes
1 lb ham slices, cut into bite-size pieces
1 (10 3/4 ounce) can cream of potato soup, undiluted
1 small onion, diced
1/4 cup melted butter
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In a small skillet saute onions in butter until tender. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
  • Combine potatoes, cheese, ham slices, soup, onions with butter and pepper in a large bowl.
  • Spoon this mixture into a 13 x 9 inch baking dish sprayed with non-stick.
  • Bake at 350° F for about 35 minutes or until lightly browned.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: Fresh, flavorful ingredients will make a big difference in the overall taste of the casserole. Use good quality ham, cheese, and potatoes.
  • Don't overcook the potatoes: The potatoes should be tender but still have a slight bite to them. Overcooked potatoes will become mushy and ruin the texture of the casserole.
  • Use a variety of cheeses: Using a combination of cheeses will give the casserole a more complex flavor. Try using a sharp cheddar cheese, a mild cheddar cheese, and a creamy cheese like mozzarella or Gruyère.
  • Season the casserole well: Don't be afraid to season the casserole generously with salt and pepper. You can also add other spices and herbs, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika.
  • Let the casserole rest before serving: This will allow the flavors to meld together and the casserole to set up properly. Let the casserole rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Conclusion:

Ham, cheese, and potato casserole is a classic comfort food dish that is perfect for any occasion. It's easy to make, delicious, and can be tailored to your own personal preferences. Whether you like your casserole cheesy, potatoey, or hammy, there's a recipe out there for you.
