2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/4 pound black forest ham, sliced
1/2 pound Swiss Gruyere cheese, sliced
1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash

Tips:

  • All-purpose flour is the most common choice for savory dishes like this one, but you may also substitute whole wheat, spelt flour or almond flour for a healthier option.
  • You can use any hard or semi-hard cheese that melts well for the cheese layer, such as cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or Gruyère.
  • For the ham layer, you can use deli ham, cooked bacon, cooked sausage, cooked chicken, or leftover roasted turkey.
  • If you don't have a 9x13 inch baking dish, you can use a smaller dish and just make fewer squares or a larger dish and make more squares.
  • You can also make these squares ahead of time and freeze them for later. To freeze, wrap the squares tightly in plastic wrap and then place them in a freezer bag. When you're ready to serve, thaw the squares overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature for a few hours.
