Time 2h

Yield About 3 1/2 quarts

Number Of Ingredients 5

Ham bone
3 carrots, coarsely chopped
2 stalks celery, coarsely chopped
1 clove garlic, peeled and smashed
1 onion, peeled, halved and then quartered

Steps:

  • Add all ingredients plus 4 quarts of water to a stockpot. Bring to a boil, then let simmer 2 hours. Skim fat from the surface, and add more water as needed. The less water in the stock, the more concentrated the flavor.
  • After 2 hours, strain bone and vegetables out of the stock. Use immediately or refrigerate or freeze stock.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of bones. This will give your broth a richer flavor. Ham bones, chicken bones, and beef bones are all good choices.
  • Roast the bones before making the broth. This will help to bring out their flavor.
  • Simmer the broth for a long time. The longer you simmer it, the more flavor it will have. Aim for at least 8 hours, but you can simmer it for up to 24 hours.
  • Add vegetables and herbs to the broth. This will help to add even more flavor. Some good choices include carrots, celery, onions, garlic, parsley, and thyme.
  • Skim the fat off the broth before using it. This will help to make it lighter and healthier.

Conclusion:

Ham broth is a delicious and versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes. It's a great way to add flavor to soups, stews, casseroles, and more. It's also a good source of nutrients, including protein, calcium, and magnesium. So next time you have some leftover ham bones, don't throw them away! Use them to make a pot of delicious ham broth.
