This delectable soup is a testament to the art of thrift, transforming humble ingredients into a hearty and flavorful feast. Join us on a culinary journey as we explore three enticing variations of ham bone soup, each offering a unique twist on this classic dish.

In the first recipe, we embark on a culinary adventure with a traditional ham bone soup that showcases the classic flavors of this beloved dish. We begin by simmering the ham bone in a flavorful broth, coaxing every ounce of savory goodness from its depths. A symphony of vegetables joins the harmonious blend, adding layers of texture and flavor. Carrots, celery, and onions form the foundation of this vegetable ensemble, while tender potatoes and vibrant green beans add heartiness and color. A bouquet of aromatic herbs, such as thyme, bay leaves, and parsley, infuses the broth with a depth of flavor that elevates the soup to new heights.

The second recipe takes us on a culinary tour of Italy with a Tuscan-inspired ham bone soup. This flavorful variation introduces new dimensions to the classic dish, beginning with the addition of aromatic fennel and the distinctive flavor of sun-dried tomatoes. Cannellini beans, known for their creamy texture and delicate flavor, join the vegetable ensemble, adding a touch of Italian flair. A sprinkling of Parmesan cheese adds a final touch of sophistication, creating a symphony of flavors that will transport you to the heart of Tuscany.

The third recipe offers a modern interpretation of this classic dish with a smoky twist. We begin by roasting the ham bone in a hot oven, infusing it with a rich and smoky flavor. This roasted ham bone then forms the foundation of our soup, imparting its smoky essence into the broth. A medley of vegetables, including sweet potatoes, corn, and black beans, adds a vibrant color and a touch of smokiness. A blend of spices, including cumin, chili powder, and smoked paprika, creates a symphony of flavors that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you craving more.

Whether you prefer the classic flavors of traditional ham bone soup, the sun-kissed charm of Tuscan-inspired soup, or the smoky allure of the modern variation, these three recipes offer a delightful journey into the world of ham bone soup. HAM BONE AND VEGETABLE SOUP

Ham Bone and Vegetable Soup image

I was looking for a good use of a ham bone without the heavy cream of a potato soup. I made use of a few other recipes to come up with one that I thought my husband and I would like. I think it is important to start with the three basics: onion, celery, and carrots. In addition, you can add a variety of different vegetables to suit your taste or depending on what you have in the house at the time.

HAM BONE SOUP

Ham Bone Soup image

Made this up after winning a ham at the company Christmas party. I'm not a big ham or soup fan, but the ham turned out pretty good and I thought I'd experiment with a soup to use up some of the leftovers. I couldn't find a recipe I liked, so I basically combined three recipes I found on 'Zaar. I'm a picky eater - don't like carrots or many types of beans - which is why I didn't stick to the navy bean/pea/carrot type recipes. I used cornstarch to thicken which didn't work very well. Another recipe recommended the potato flakes (which I don't have). I made my ham with looneytunesfan's Brown Sugar Honey Baked Ham recipe (#151563). The soup seemed sweet to me and I'm guessing it's because of the sugary ham. I think it turned out pretty good so I thought I'd share. Feel free to experiment or make suggestions. I'm more of a baker than a cook! :)

USING THE CHRISTMAS HAM BONE, MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD POTATO SOUP

Using the Christmas Ham Bone, Makes You Feel Good Potato Soup image

This recipe is a "base" potato soup that is WONDERFUL as is, but with SO many possibilities! I dumped in a can on Niblets corn, and it became chowder! It was wonderful! How about: add Julienne'ed carrots close to the end; or 8 oz Velveeta cheese; or 2 cups cooked broccoli florets; or throw in some cooked shrimp and crab meat & some Cajun seasonings...; or any combination you can think of! YUM! If your hambone isn't too meaty, add a cup of shredded or chopped ham from leftovers.

Provided by Shelley Lee

Categories     Chowders

Time 1h45m

Yield 12 cups, 8-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 ham bone, with visible meat
1 medium onion, diced
4 cups water
1/2 teaspoon celery seeds or 1 stalk celery, chopped
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
5 medium red potatoes, cut in 1 inch cubes
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup flour
2 cups half-and-half

Steps:

  • Place first 6 ingredients in a Dutch Oven, bring to a boil over medium heat, and simmer for 30 minutes or until meat easily comes off the bone with a fork. Shred ham from the bone, discard any fat, return meat to the pot. Add diced potatoes, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender.
  • While potatoes are cooking, in a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat being careful not to brown. Add flour, stirring constantly until incorporated well. Bring heat to medium/high and gradually stir in the Half n Half until creamy, thick and bubbly, stirring constantly, being careful not to scorch. Once it thickly coats the spoon, remove from heat.
  • When the potatoes are tender, stir the sauce mixture into the potato pot over medium heat, stirring constantly. Let simmer until soup reaches the desired consistency. You can add milk to adjust.
  • There has been no salt added to this point. You may add salt, pepper, garlic, herbs or seasonings to your taste.

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 ham bone
4 cups water
4 cups chicken broth
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped celery & leaves
1 cup chopped carrot
2 bunches rough chopped escarole
2 (16 ounce) cans cannellini beans
1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 tablespoon pepper
1/2 tablespoon garlic powder, to taste
1 1/2 tablespoons italian seasoning or 1 1/2 tablespoons oregano

Steps:

  • 1. In a large pot place ham bone and water. Bring to boil then reduce heat for about 15-20 minutes.
  • 2. Then stir in chicken broth.
  • 3. Add chopped onion, celery, and carrots.
  • 4. Add escarole, beans, and diced tomatoes.
  • 5. Season to taste with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and oregano or Italian seasoning.
  • 6. Bring to a boil then cover pot and simmer for 2 hours.
  • 7. Serve with grated Romano cheese.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham bone: Select a ham bone with plenty of meat still attached for a flavorful soup. Smoked ham bones impart a richer flavor than fresh or cured ones.
  • Soak the ham bone: Soaking the ham bone in cold water for at least 30 minutes helps remove excess salt and impurities, resulting in a cleaner-tasting broth.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: A mix of vegetables adds flavor and texture to the soup. Common choices include carrots, celery, onions, potatoes, and peas. For a more hearty soup, try adding barley or rice.
  • Season to taste: Ham bone soup is typically seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. However, you can adjust the seasonings to your preference. Consider adding herbs and spices like bay leaves, thyme, or rosemary for extra flavor.
  • Don't overcook the vegetables: Overcooked vegetables can become mushy and lose their flavor. Aim to cook them until they are tender but still have a slight bite.
  • Serve with crusty bread or crackers: A bowl of ham bone soup is even more satisfying when served with a side of crusty bread or crackers for dipping.

Conclusion:

Ham bone soup is a delicious and versatile dish that is perfect for a cold winter day. With its smoky flavor, hearty texture, and customizable ingredients, it's a soup that the whole family will enjoy. So next time you have a leftover ham bone, don't throw it away! Use it to make a pot of this flavorful and satisfying soup.
