PRESSURE COOKER NAVY BEAN SOUP WITH HAM

Pressure cooker navy bean soup with ham image

The taste of this bean soup is unusual... and quite pleasing! The combination of basil, nutmeg and oregano gives it a tasty punch.

Provided by Jan Mullikin

Categories     Bean Soups

Time 3h25m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 16 oz. bag navy beans, dried
1 cottage ham butt
1 c chopped onions
1 c chopped celery
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp basil
1 tsp salt

Steps:

  • 1. Rinse and drain navy beans, watching and throwing out any small pebbles. Put in pressure cooker in 3 inches of water, without the lid. Bring to a boil and boil 5 minutes. Remove from burner. Put all in a separate pot for about 2 hours. Then drain beans and add fresh water.
  • 2. While you are waiting for the beans to soften, pressure cook cottage ham butt according to size and directions on the label. Cool. Shred ham, removing the fat. Set aside.
  • 3. Return beans to the pressure cooker with the fresh water, chopped onions, celery and shredded ham. Pressure cook about 20 minutes on full heat. Remove from stove, reduce pressure under cold water and open lid. Add salt, pepper, oregano, basil and bring to a boil. Should be ready to eat. If your beans are still too hard, pressure cook a little longer. You'll get used to your cooker and how long it takes depending on your stove top type. Best served with homemade baked cornbread (not sweet!) or fried cornbread patties.
  • 4. This soup freezes beautifully. Just put desired serving size in freezer quart or gallon bags and freeze. Great to have on hand for a quick lunch or light supper on a cold winter day!

HAM BEAN SOUP (PRESSURE COOKER)

Ham Bean Soup (Pressure Cooker) image

This is a quicker version of my Recipe #145910. The only real difference between this and the long simmering version is that you don't have to remember to soak the beans overnight, and the beans retain more texture. My dad loves the original recipe, and he declared this to be just as good.

Time 1h35m

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (16 ounce) bag 15 bean soup mix, seasoning packet discarded
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
1 teaspoon garlic powder
fresh ground black pepper

2 cups cooked ham, cubed

Steps:

  • Put the ham bone in the bottom of the pressure cooker (I normally have to break mine into pieces so it will fit).
  • Pour the dried beans on top of the bone, and cover with cold water (don't fill your cooker more than 2/3 full). Sprinkle on the dried onion, garlic powder, and pepper.
  • Lock on the lid, bring to pressure, then reduce the heat and cook for 25 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat, and let sit for 15 minutes, before carefully removing any remaining pressure.
  • Remove the lid, pour in the can of tomatoes including their juice, and the ham pieces. Simmer for 20 minutes.

BASIC HAM & BEANS (PRESSURE COOKER)

Basic Ham & Beans (Pressure Cooker) image

Easy way to make ham and beans and not have to wait all day for it! I have made this recipe to fit into my 5 qt electronic pressure cooker.

Provided by 1kmarcum

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 40m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 1/2 lbs dry white beans
1 1/2 lbs ham
4 1/2 cups water
1 small yellow onion, diced
1 small garlic clove, minced
1 bay leaf
salt & pepper

Steps:

  • Cut up onion, garlic and ham.
  • Rinse beans and remove any that are discolored.
  • Place all ingredients in pressure cooker with seasonings to taste.
  • Turn on high pressure for 25 minutes. (If you have an electronic pressure cooker the meat setting is great for this recipe).
  • Remove bay leaf.
  • Serve with cornbread!

Tips:

  • Use a variety of beans. This will give your soup a more complex flavor and texture. Try using a combination of white beans, black beans, and kidney beans.
  • Don't overcook the beans. They should be tender but still hold their shape. Overcooked beans will become mushy and lose their flavor.
  • Add vegetables to your soup. This will make it more nutritious and flavorful. Try using carrots, celery, onions, and potatoes.
  • Use a flavorful ham hock. This will give your soup a rich, smoky flavor. If you don't have a ham hock, you can use a ham bone or smoked sausage.
  • Season your soup to taste. Add salt, pepper, and other spices to taste. You can also add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice for a little extra brightness.
  • Serve your soup with crusty bread or crackers. This will help to soak up the delicious broth.

Conclusion:

Ham and bean soup is a classic comfort food that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. With a few simple ingredients, you can create a delicious and satisfying soup that the whole family will enjoy.
