HAM, ASPARAGUS, AND PASTA CASSEROLE

Ham, Asparagus, and Pasta Casserole image

I have no idea where this came from, but I'm pretty sure I tweaked it from some cookbook or another. This is not only easy, it's incredibly tasty. Not too heavy, and doesn't take long in the oven so it's not bad for a summertime casserole.

NORTH CROATIAN HAM AND PASTA CASSEROLE (KRPICE SA SUNKOM)

North Croatian Ham and Pasta Casserole (Krpice Sa Sunkom) image

This is recipe from Zagorje region in Croatia. I liked this meal when I was a kid and I like it still today. This meal is very suitable for light dinner or lunch. It is better if you use smoked ham.

Provided by nitko

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 1h10m

Yield 4 portions, 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

400 g pasta (farfalle or similar flat pasta)
200 g ham
40 g butter
40 g onions
3 eggs
300 g sour cream
100 ml milk
40 g butter
35 g breadcrumbs
150 g fresh parsley leaves
salt
pepper

Steps:

  • Cook pasta until al dente.
  • Sauté finely sliced onion on butter until soft and add sliced ham. Sauté it not more than 5 minutes than let it cool for a bit.
  • Take casserole pot; coat it with butter and sprinkle bread crumbs over to cover the butter.
  • Mix well eggs, milk, butter and some sour cream. Add chopped parsley leaves salt and pepper into eggs and mix with ham.
  • To prepare casserole first lay one layer of pasta, than mix the rest of pasta with ham and eggs and cover the first layer of pasta.
  • Cover with the rest of sour cream. Bake it for 25 to 35 minutes on 200°C Serve hot.

Tips:

  • Choose the right pasta: Short pastas like penne, macaroni, or shells work best for a casserole because they hold the sauce well. Medium-sized pastas like rotini or fusilli can also be used. Avoid long pastas like spaghetti or linguine, as they can be difficult to stir and may not cook evenly.
  • Cook the pasta al dente: This means cooking the pasta until it is just tender but still has a slight bite to it. Overcooked pasta will become mushy and won't hold its shape in the casserole.
  • Use a flavorful base: The base of your casserole can be made with a variety of ingredients, such as a cream sauce, tomato sauce, or even a simple broth. Be sure to use flavorful ingredients that will complement the ham and pasta.
  • Don't skimp on the cheese: Cheese is an essential ingredient in any good casserole. It adds flavor, richness, and a golden brown crust. Use a blend of cheeses that you like, such as cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, or Gruyère.
  • Add some vegetables: Vegetables add color, texture, and nutrients to your casserole. Try using broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, or spinach. You can also use a frozen vegetable mix.
  • Season to taste: Be sure to season your casserole with salt, pepper, and other spices to taste. You can also add a splash of hot sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little extra kick.
  • Bake until bubbly and golden brown: Bake your casserole in a preheated oven until it is bubbly and golden brown on top. This usually takes about 30 minutes.

Conclusion:

Ham and pasta casserole is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal or a potluck. With a few simple tips, you can create a casserole that is flavorful, cheesy, and packed with vegetables. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give ham and pasta casserole a try.
