1 ½ cups soft bread crumbs

HAM AND MAC BAKE

Ham and Mac Bake image

I love this recipe because it uses up some 'stuff' left over in my kitchen. The sweet of the apples lends loads of flavor to the somewhat salty ham. You may want to watch the mustard if you are not used to a pretty strong mustard over-taste. Enjoy

Categories     Pasta

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 1/2 oz macaroni, dry
1/4 c butter
1/4 c flour
2 Tbsp brown sugar
2 Tbsp mustard or less if you no not care for a pretty strong mustard flavor
1/4 tsp salt
2 c milk
2 c ham, cooked and cubed
2 apples, peeled and sliced
2 tsp butter
1/4 c plain bread crumbs

Steps:

  • 1. Cook macaroni in boiling salted water until just tender, 8 to 10 minutes; drain. Any dry pasta will do if you do not have macaroni on hand. Pennini works well.
  • 2. In large saucepan melt the 1/4 cup butter; blend in flour, brown sugar, mustard, salt and pepper.
  • 3. Add milk all at once; cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.
  • 4. Stir in cooked macaroni, ham and apple slices.
  • 5. Turn mixture into a 2 quart casserole.
  • 6. Sprinkle bread crumbs and dot 2 tsp butter over casserole.
  • 7. Bake, uncovered, at 350 for about 35 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use leftover ham. This recipe is a great way to use up leftover ham from a holiday meal or a weeknight dinner. If you don't have any leftover ham, you can also use deli ham or cooked ham steak.
  • Choose your macaroni noodles carefully. The type of macaroni noodles you use will affect the texture of the dish. For a creamy, cheesy bake, use small elbow macaroni noodles. For a more al dente texture, use penne or rotini noodles.
  • Don't overcook the macaroni noodles. Cook the macaroni noodles according to the package directions, but be careful not to overcook them. Overcooked noodles will make the dish mushy.
  • Use a good quality cheese. The cheese is one of the most important ingredients in this dish, so be sure to use a good quality cheese. A sharp cheddar cheese or a Gruyère cheese are both good options.
  • Add some vegetables. If you want to add some vegetables to the dish, you can stir in some cooked broccoli, cauliflower, or peas. You can also add a handful of chopped fresh herbs, such as parsley, chives, or thyme.

Conclusion:

This ham and mac bake is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight dinner or a potluck. It is also a great way to use up leftover ham. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can have a delicious and satisfying meal that the whole family will enjoy.
