My Mom created this recipe and I really enjoyed it as a child. As an adult, my taste changed just a bit so I modified her recipe to 'kick it up' a bit. It is fabulous even though the ingredients list is quite short! This is a must make with leftover ham and everyone agrees it's absolutely delicious.

HAM AND CORN CHOWDER
My mother is an excellent cook who rarely follows a recipe exactly. My two sisters and I do the same thing, adding something here, omitting something there. With this soup, I sometimes leave out the bacon and butter, and have used canned corn and creamed corn with good results. We like to eat this soup with big soft hot pretzels instead of crackers. -Sharon Rose Brand, Stayton, Oregon

Tips:
- Use a variety of beans. This will give your chowder a more complex flavor and texture. Some good options include navy beans, great northern beans, and pinto beans. You can also use a mix of different beans.
- Don't overcook the beans. They should be tender but still hold their shape. Overcooked beans will become mushy and ruin the texture of your chowder.
- Use a good quality ham. The ham is the star of the chowder, so it's important to use a good quality one. Look for a ham that is smoked or cured, and that has a good amount of meat on it.
- Don't be afraid to experiment with different vegetables. In addition to the carrots, celery, and onion, you can also add other vegetables to your chowder, such as potatoes, corn, or peas. Just be sure to cook them until they are tender.
- Serve the chowder with a side of crusty bread or crackers. This will help to soak up the delicious broth.
Conclusion:
Ham and bean chowder is a hearty and flavorful soup that is perfect for a cold winter day. It's easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. So next time you're looking for a comforting and delicious meal, give ham and bean chowder a try. You won't be disappointed!
