Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/3 cup whole milk
4 baking apples (about 2 lbs. total), cored, peeled, and cut into wedges
1/3 cup sugar
1 large egg, lightly beaten
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Butter a 9-inch springform pan and set it aside.

  • Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake pan. Place the pan in the center of the oven and bake until fairly firm and golden, about 25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, prepare the topping: In a small bowl, combine the sugar, egg, and melted butter, and stir to blend. Set it aside.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Granny Smith apples are a classic choice for apple cake, as they hold their shape well and have a tart flavor that balances out the sweetness of the cake. However, you can use any type of apple you like. Just be sure to peel and core them before using.
  • Use fresh lemon juice: Fresh lemon juice helps to brighten the flavor of the cake and prevent the apples from browning. If you don't have fresh lemon juice, you can use bottled lemon juice, but be sure to dilute it with a little water.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter will make the cake tough. Just mix until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean: This is the best way to ensure that the cake is cooked through.
  • Let the cake cool completely before serving: This will help the cake to set and make it easier to slice.

Conclusion:

Grandmother's Apple Cake is a classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is simple to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With its tender crumb, sweet and tart apples, and rich cinnamon flavor, this cake is sure to be a hit.
