Tips:

  • Choose the right grits. You can use either stone-ground or quick-cooking grits for this recipe. Stone-ground grits have a more rustic texture, while quick-cooking grits are more tender.
  • Cook the grits ahead of time. You can cook the grits up to 2 days ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator. When you're ready to make the casserole, just reheat the grits over low heat until they're warmed through.
  • Use high-quality ham. The ham is the star of this dish, so it's important to use a good-quality ham. Look for a ham that is fully cooked and has a good smoke flavor.
  • Don't overcook the casserole. The casserole is done when the grits are heated through and the cheese is melted. Overcooking will make the grits and ham tough.
  • Serve the casserole immediately. Grits and ham casserole is best served hot. You can garnish it with chopped green onions, parsley, or chives.

Conclusion:

Grits and ham casserole is a classic Southern dish that is perfect for a comforting meal. It's easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. Whether you like your grits creamy or firm, with lots of cheese or just a little, this casserole is sure to please everyone at the table.
