- Choose a good quality gouda cheese that melts well. Gouda from Holland is generally considered to be the best.
- Use thick slices of ham for a more satisfying sandwich. Smoked ham adds a delicious smoky flavor.
- Pumpernickel bread is a classic choice for grilled cheese sandwiches. It has a slightly sour flavor that pairs well with the rich cheese and ham.
- Butter the bread before grilling to help it brown and crisp.
- Don't overcrowd the pan when grilling the sandwiches. This will prevent them from cooking evenly.
- Cook the sandwiches over medium heat so that the cheese has time to melt without burning the bread.
- Serve the sandwiches hot, with your favorite sides.
