Number Of Ingredients 4

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
8 hearty slices whole-grain bread, or bread of choice, about 1/3 inch thick
3 tablespoons grainy mustard, plus more to taste
6 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Spread butter over one side of each slice of bread.
  • Arrange bread, butter side down, on a piece of plastic wrap or wax paper. Spread each slice of bread with mustard. Arrange cheese over 4 slices of bread, and sandwich together with remaining bread, butter side out.
  • Set a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Cook sandwiches in batches in skillet. Using a spatula, press down firmly on sandwiches. Cook until bread is golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce heat to medium low. Turn sandwiches over, press down with spatula, and cook until bread is golden and cheese is starting to melt, about 2 minutes more. Transfer to a baking sheet, and place in oven. Bake until cheese is completely melted. Serve immediately.

Tips:

  • Choose the right bread: A sturdy bread that can hold up to the heat and cheese is essential. Sourdough, country bread, or a hearty whole-grain bread are all good options.
  • Use high-quality cheese: The cheese is the star of the show, so don't skimp on quality. Look for a cheese that melts well and has a bold flavor. Cheddar, Gruyère, or fontina are all good choices.
  • Add some extras: Don't be afraid to get creative with your grilled cheese. Add some sliced ham or bacon, sautéed mushrooms or onions, or even a fried egg. You can also use different types of mustard, such as honey mustard or Dijon mustard, to add a bit of extra flavor.
  • Cook the grilled cheese slowly: Don't rush the cooking process. Cook the grilled cheese over medium heat so that the bread has time to get golden brown and the cheese has time to melt and bubble.
  • Serve the grilled cheese immediately: Grilled cheese is best when served hot and fresh. Serve it with a side of soup or salad for a complete meal.

Conclusion:

With these tips, you'll be able to make a grilled cheese sandwich that is perfectly golden brown, gooey, and delicious. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, reach for some bread, cheese, and mustard, and get grilling!
