GRANDMOTHER'S POUND CAKE

The recipe is from Fannie Farmer Cookbook (1972 edition). It is a buttery dense cake. I have been making it for years. My family loves this cake. My daughter is especially fond of the ends. I have made it to serve plain or as an ice cream cake topped with a frozen fruit mixture. You must use an electric mixer to get the batter light and fluffy.

GRANDMA'S ORIGINAL POUND CAKE

Grandma's Original Pound Cake image

After resurrecting this recipe when Mom almost lost it, it's a long-time family favorite. Similar to many "old time" recipes but with many fewer eggs and separating and folding in the egg whites to lighten the texture. But this is NOT a dry cake, and so full of flavor it can stand alone on the plate! ENJOY!

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients, especially pure vanilla extract, for the best flavor.
  • Make sure all ingredients are at room temperature before starting.
  • Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. This will help incorporate air into the batter, resulting in a lighter, more tender cake.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. This will help prevent the batter from curdling.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Overmixing will toughen the cake.
  • Pour the batter into a greased and floured bundt pan. Tap the pan on the counter a few times to release any air bubbles.
  • Bake the cake in a preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar or drizzle it with a glaze for a finishing touch.

Conclusion:

Grandma's Pound Cake is a classic recipe that is sure to please everyone. It is easy to make and can be dressed up or down for any occasion. Whether you are serving it for breakfast, brunch, or dessert, this cake is sure to be a hit. With its moist, tender crumb and rich flavor, it is a timeless recipe that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
