OLD-FASHIONED APPLESAUCE

Old-Fashioned Applesauce image

We had all kinds of apple trees in the yard when I was growing up, so I don't know for sure which ones Mother liked best for applesauce. (Today I use Cortlands.) I do know that her applesauce was very white. The secret, she said, was to keep the apples in salt water while she peeled them so that they wouldn't darken. -Doris Natvig, Jesup, Iowa

  • Bake at 350 F about 45 minutes to till done.
  • Cool in pan.
  • (an additional 1/3 cup raisins can be substituted for the 1/2 cup of pecans, if desired).

Tips:

  • To ensure your cake turns out perfectly moist, it is crucial to use the correct measurements for the ingredients. Using a kitchen scale to weigh the ingredients is highly recommended for accuracy. However, if you do not have a kitchen scale, be sure to level off your measuring cups to obtain the appropriate measurements.
  • For the best flavor and texture, use fresh, crisp apples for your applesauce. Granny Smith apples are a great choice due to their tartness and ability to hold their shape when cooked.
  • If you are short on time, you can use store-bought applesauce instead of making your own. Be sure to choose a unsweetened applesauce to avoid an overly sweet cake.
  • Do not overmix the batter. Overmixing can result in a tough, dense cake. Mix only until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the cake in a preheated oven. This ensures that the cake bakes evenly throughout.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting or serving. This will help prevent the cake from falling apart.

Conclusion:

Grandma's Old-Fashioned Applesauce Cake is a classic recipe that is sure to please everyone. With its moist, flavorful crumb and sweet applesauce filling, this cake is perfect for any occasion. Serve it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream for an extra special treat.
