Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes. Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes are best for hash browns, as they have a high starch content that helps them to brown and crisp up nicely.
  • Shred the potatoes finely. This will help them to cook evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan. If you overcrowd the pan, the hash browns will steam instead of fry and they won't get crispy.
  • Use a well-seasoned cast iron skillet. This will help the hash browns to get a nice even crust.
  • Cook the hash browns over medium heat. This will help them to cook through without burning.
  • Flip the hash browns only once. Flipping them too often will break them up and make them mushy.
  • Season the hash browns to taste. You can use salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, or any other seasonings that you like.
  • Serve the hash browns immediately. They are best when they are hot and crispy.

Conclusion:

Grandma's hash browns are a classic breakfast side dish that is easy to make and always a hit. With the right ingredients and a little patience, you can make perfect hash browns at home. Serve them with your favorite breakfast foods, such as eggs, bacon, sausage, or pancakes.
