As the title suggests, this was my Grandmother's recipe. I've tweaked the amount of cheese and sour cream depending on what I've got in the fridge and it always turns out great! My mother has suggested this was made up as a way to use up ingredients in the fridge.

GRANDMA'S WHIPPED HAMBURGERS

Grandma's Whipped Hamburgers image

While looking through my 101-year-old grandma's old recipes I came across this one for hamburger patties - and remembered that they were grandma's personal favorite. The ground beef and other ingredients are beat (whipped) with a hand mixture until all ingredients are incorporated. This changes the consistency of the patty to a...

Categories     Burgers

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 lb ground beef
2 Tbsp flour
1/2 tsp worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt
1/4 c onion, minced (add more or less onion to your taste)
pinch of thyme (optional)
pinch of rosemary (optional)
1/2 - 3/4 c undiluted canned evaporated milk
water (amount varies)

Steps:

  • 1. Put ground beef in a large bowl. Add all other ingredients EXCEPT for the canned milk and water. Whip the mixture with hand mixer to blend well.
  • 2. Slowly add evaporated milk, beating constantly. Add 1/4 to 1/2 water - slowly add more if mixture is too 'stiff'. ***Grandma hadn't written down the amount of water, so my amount is a 'guesstimate'. I do remember that if you make them into regular patties to put into buns they will need to be firmer than the smaller mounds.
  • 3. When all of the liquid is absorbed, cover the bowl and let stand in the refrigertor for a few hours. - It can be cooked right away, but the texture improves upon standing.
  • 4. Drop into small mounds (about 16) in large skillet. Brown over medium heat for 2 minutes on each side, or until cooked through OR form into four regular patties, cooking for several minutes on each side, or until cooked through.

GRAMMA'S HAMBURGER HOTDISH

Gramma's Hamburger Hotdish image

This is a one dish meal that was my favorite when I was kid. I ate it with cold cottage cheese on the side. I think the casserole was served too hot for me and the cottage cheese cooled it down and added a bit of cheese. This was a recipe my Gramma obviously made - hense the name. I wish I could say that my kids loved it as much as I did but for some reason they just don't like many foods mixed together yet. My sister-in-law is from Scotland and she said it reminds her of foods she ate when she was a kid. My Grampa's family was from Scotland so maybe it was something his Mom made - I guess I will never really know since they aren't around to ask any more. My Dad was the one who alwaysalways said that the key to anything with tomato sauce was to add a little bit of sugar. I don't do this anymore but left it in the recipe because it was my Dad's contribution.

Tips:

1. Use Fresh Ingredients:

Always opt for fresh, high-quality ingredients to ensure the best flavor and texture in your Hamburger Hot Dish.

2. Brown the Ground Beef Thoroughly:

Browning the ground beef properly adds depth of flavor and prevents greasiness. Cook it over medium-high heat until it's no longer pink.

3. Don't Overcook the Noodles:

Cook the noodles according to the package instructions, but be careful not to overcook them. Slightly undercooked noodles will hold their shape better in the casserole.

4. Use a Variety of Vegetables:

Feel free to mix and match your favorite vegetables in this dish. Frozen or canned vegetables can be used in place of fresh ones if desired.

5. Season Generously:

Don't be afraid to season the casserole well. Use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika for a classic flavor profile.

6. Let it Rest Before Serving:

After baking the casserole, let it rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the casserole to set.

Conclusion:
