GRANDMA'S CUT-OUT SUGAR COOKIES

Time 4h

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 tbsp milk
3 cups flour
1½ sticks butter
4 cups powdered sugar
1½ tsp almond extract
2-4 tbsp half n' half

Steps:

  • In a mixer on high, cream the butter, sugar, and eggs together.
  • Turn mixer to low and add baking soda, cream of tartar, salt, vanilla, and milk until well combined.
  • Slowly add in the flour a little at a time until well combined.
  • Chill dough 1 to 2 hours.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°.
  • Sprinkle the counter with a light dusting of flour.
  • Roll out a handful of dough until it is an eighth- to a quarter-inch thick. The thinner the dough, the crispier the cookies will be. If you like them to be chewy on the inside, roll the dough thicker.
  • Cut out cookies in desired shapes. Use a spatula to help get them off the counter. The dough is easier to work with when it's cool, so if it gets really sticky, put it back in the fridge.
  • Bake cookies for about 9-12 minutes or until cookies are lightly brown.
  • When cooled, decorate the cookies with butter cream frosting and sprinkles.
  • In a mixer on high, beat the butter until it's fluffy, about 5 minutes.
  • Beat in the powdered sugar, a little at a time.
  • Add the almond extract.
  • Add the half n' half a little at a time while still beating the frosting on high. Do this until desired fluffiness is achieved. It should look smooth and creamy with small peaks.
  • Add food coloring of your choice.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients. The better the ingredients, the better the cookies will be. Look for organic, unbleached flour, real butter, and pure vanilla extract.
  • Chill the dough before rolling. This will help the cookies hold their shape and prevent them from spreading too much in the oven.
  • Roll the dough to a uniform thickness. This will help the cookies bake evenly.
  • Use a sharp cookie cutter. This will give you clean, precise edges.
  • Bake the cookies at the right temperature. The cookies should be baked at a temperature between 350 and 375 degrees Fahrenheit. If the oven is too hot, the cookies will brown too quickly and the edges will burn. If the oven is too cool, the cookies will not bake through and will be chewy.
  • Let the cookies cool completely before frosting. This will help the frosting set properly.

Conclusion:

Grandma's Cutout Sugar Cookies are a delicious and classic treat that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a little planning and effort, you can make these cookies at home and impress your family and friends. Just remember to follow the tips above and you'll be sure to end up with perfect cookies every time.
