Yield 4 to 6 servings (Makes about 8 3/4 cups sauce)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
2 pounds lean ground beef
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley or 1 teaspoon, crumbled
2 bay leaves
1 tablespoon dried basil, crumbled
1 28-ounce can Italian plum tomatoes, undrained

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Stir in tomatoes, water, tomato sauce and tomato paste. Simmer until reduced to sauce consistency, breaking up tomatoes with spoon, about 2 hours. Season with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 2 days ahead. Cover and chill. Rewarm sauce over medium-low heat before using.)

GRANDMA'S BAKED SPAGHETTI

This is a recipe that has been in our family for almost 70 yrs, and has become synonomous with special occasions!! Was my birthday dinner for years and has become my daughter's favorite. So yummy, we presented it on fox 5's Good Day Cafe which is part of Good Day New York with Rosanna Scotto and Greg Kelly

Time 1h40m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 lb thin spaghetti i use ronzoni #9
16 oz shredded cheese usually sharp cheddar and provolognee
1 jar(s) tomato sauce
1 can(s) tomato puree
bread crumbs, seasoned
1/4 stick butter
freshly grated or shredded parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • 1. . Cook spaghetti as usual, and put one layer in greased Pyrex dish 2. Spoon tomato sauce and tomato puree to evenly cover pasta 3. On top of sauce covered pasta, sprinkle half of the shredded cheese. I add fresh grated parm to the cheese mixture and I probably use too much cheese, but we like it cheesy!! 4. Put another layer of pasta on top of the cheese
  • 2. 5. Cover again with sauce and puree 6. Put the remaining cheese mixture on top 7. On top of the cheese spread a thin layer of bread crumbs which will bake into a crust 8. Put thin slices of butter on top of the cheese among the breadcrumbs (4 or 5 pieces of butter) 9. Put the dish in the oven at 350 degrees for about 50 minutes - one hour 10. When the crust forms on the pasta and turns a brownish color, take it out of the oven and let it sit for a few minutes. Have some fresh parm to sprinkle. Eat up!! Definitely not low fat, but delicious!!

This is my grandma's recipe, but it is too delicious to keep to myself. I used to request it for my birthday dinner every year growing up. Cozy dish for cool weather. Hope you enjoy! Note: For the cheese I go to the deli and have them cut me a hunk of cheese as close to 1 lb as possible. Better to go over than under:)
