This is a casserole my grandmother would serve using her leftover ham from Easter. I also make it to use up leftover ham, or I buy a ham slice and make it anytime because so many people like it. Enjoy!

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 1h5m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 medium cauliflower
4 tablespoons butter or 4 tablespoons margarine
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup sour cream
2 cups cubed cooked ham (the cubes shouldn't be too big)
1 (3 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained
1 cup soft breadcrumbs (grate bread or put in the food processor, any bread will work but I prefer a firmer one like Pepperi)
1 tablespoon cold butter or 1 tablespoon margarine

Steps:

  • Cut cauliflower into florets (about 3 cups). Cook in boiling salted water to cover 10 to 12 minutes, or until tender; drain and set aside.
  • Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Whisk in flour until smooth. Gradually add milk, whisking constantly, until mixture begins to thicken. Lower heat to medium. Add cheese and sour cream, stirring until cheese melts. (Do not boil.).
  • Stir cauliflower, ham and mushrooms into cheese sauce; pour into a 2-quart baking dish. Sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly over casserole. Cut 1 tablespoon butter into pieces and sprinkle evenly over breadcrumbs.
  • Bake casserole, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham: Select a fully cooked ham for easy preparation. Bone-in hams add flavor, while boneless hams are more convenient to carve.
  • Preheat the oven: Ensure your oven is preheated to the desired temperature before placing the ham inside. This helps the ham cook evenly.
  • Use a roasting pan: Place the ham in a roasting pan with a rack to elevate it and allow the juices to drip below.
  • Cover the ham: Cover the ham with foil during most of the cooking time to prevent it from drying out.
  • Glaze the ham: Baste the ham with a glaze made from ingredients like brown sugar, honey, or pineapple juice during the last 30 minutes of cooking for a sweet and flavorful crust.
  • Use a meat thermometer: Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the ham to ensure it reaches an internal temperature of 140°F (60°C) for pre-cooked hams.
  • Let the ham rest: Allow the ham to rest for at least 15 minutes before carving to redistribute the juices and ensure tender slices.

Conclusion:

With these tips in mind, you can prepare a delicious and impressive holiday ham that will be the centerpiece of your festive meal. Remember to choose a high-quality ham, glaze it with your favorite flavors, and cook it to perfection using the appropriate cooking method. Whether you prefer a traditional glazed ham, a maple-glazed ham, or a honey-baked ham, the key is to follow the recipe carefully and adjust the cooking time based on the size and type of ham you have. With a little planning and preparation, you can create a memorable holiday ham that your family and friends will love.
