CROCK POT GOULASH

Crock Pot Goulash image

Seems like everyone in the Midwest has a recipe for goulash that has nothing to do with the Hungarian kind. This was my mom's recipe, which I adapted for the crock pot after living in a apartment with an unruly oven that would set off the smoke alarm no matter how often I cleaned it. This is a very simple recipe, but it's my brother's favorite meal in the world (thus I make it for him every Christmas Eve). Good with garlic-cheese bread.

1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons paprika
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1 cup water
1/4 cup flour

  • Place meat in crockpot and cover with sliced onion.
  • Combine garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, salt, paprika and mustard Stir in water, mix well, and pour over meat.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality beef. The better the beef, the better the goulash will be. Look for chuck roast, short ribs, or brisket, which have a good amount of marbling.
  • Brown the beef before adding it to the crock pot. This will help to develop the flavor of the beef and prevent it from becoming tough.
  • Use a variety of vegetables. This will give the goulash more flavor and texture. Some good options include onions, carrots, celery, potatoes, and bell peppers.
  • Season the goulash well. Use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. You can also add other spices, such as cumin, coriander, or oregano, to taste.
  • Cook the goulash on low for 8-10 hours. This will allow the flavors to develop and the beef to become tender.
  • Serve the goulash with your favorite sides. Some good options include mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
