Tips:

  • Use active dry yeast that is not expired. Proof the yeast in warm water with a pinch of sugar before adding it to the dough to ensure it is active.
  • Make sure all ingredients, including the water, are at room temperature before using. This will help the dough rise properly.
  • Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes. The dough should be slightly sticky, but not too sticky to handle.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size. Cover the dough with plastic wrap or a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
  • Divide the dough into three equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 18 inches long.
  • Braid the three ropes of dough together. Place the braid on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  • Let the dough rise again for about 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size. Cover the dough with plastic wrap or a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) before baking the bread.
  • Brush the top of the bread with an egg wash before baking. This will give the bread a golden brown color.
