Steps:
- In large, deep skillet, fry bacon until crisp.
- DO NOT DRAIN.
- Add onions, vinegar, sugar and seasonings, stir.
- Simmer 20-25 minutes.
- Meanwhile mix all the beans together.
- (I usually use a large throwaway aluminum roaster pan like the turkey size either oval or rectangle that you can also bake in and then throw away).
- Pour hot bacon mixture over beans in pan and mix well.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 70-80 minutes.
- This freezes well.
Tips:
- Soak your beans overnight: Soaking beans helps to soften them and reduce their cooking time. It also helps to remove some of the indigestible sugars that can cause gas.
- Use a slow cooker: Slow cookers are a great way to cook beans because they allow them to cook slowly and evenly. This results in tender, flavorful beans.
- Season your beans well: Beans are a blank canvas when it comes to flavor, so don't be afraid to experiment with different seasonings. Some popular options include garlic, onion, cumin, chili powder, and smoked paprika.
- Add beans to salads, soups, and stews: Beans are a great way to add protein, fiber, and flavor to salads, soups, and stews. They can also be used as a meat substitute in many dishes.
Conclusion:
Beans are a healthy, versatile, and affordable ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes. They are a great source of protein, fiber, and vitamins and minerals. With a little planning and effort, you can easily incorporate more beans into your diet and enjoy all the benefits they have to offer.
