Categories     Vegetable

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
1 tsp salt
dash of pepper
1 tsp prepared mustard
1-1/3 cup milk
1 egg yolk , beaten
2 cups shredded cabbage
1 cup onions, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded cheese
1 cup buttered bread crumbs, toasted ( can use pepperidge farm dressing)

Steps:

  • Melt butter, add flour, salt, pepper and mustard, stirring constantly until bubbly. Add milk and continue stirring until thickened. Add egg yolk and cook one minute . Into a baking dish, place layers of half the cabbage, onions cheese and cream sauce. Repeat layers, using the rest of the ingredients. Top with buttered crumbs, cover and bake in 375 deg oven for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 5 minutes of until lightly browned.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cabbage: Select a firm, heavy head of cabbage with tightly packed leaves. Avoid any heads that show signs of wilting or bruising.
  • Cut the cabbage properly: To ensure even cooking, cut the cabbage into uniform wedges or slices. The thickness of the slices will determine the cooking time, so adjust accordingly.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When cooking the cabbage, make sure not to overcrowd the pan. This will prevent the cabbage from cooking evenly and may result in a soggy texture.
  • Add flavor enhancers: To elevate the taste of the cabbage, consider adding flavor enhancers such as bacon, sausage, onions, garlic, or herbs. These ingredients will add depth and complexity to the dish.
  • Cook the cabbage until tender: Depending on the cooking method and the thickness of the cabbage slices, the cooking time may vary. Cook the cabbage until it is tender but still retains a slight crunch. Overcooking can make the cabbage mushy.

Conclusion:

With its versatility and affordability, cabbage is a fantastic ingredient that can be transformed into a variety of delicious dishes.
