Tips:
- Choose the right ham: Opt for a fully cooked ham, as it requires less preparation time. Consider the size of the ham based on the number of servings you need.
- Score the ham: Use a sharp knife to score the ham in a diamond pattern, cutting through the fat but not into the meat. This helps the glaze penetrate the ham and enhances its flavor.
- Prepare the glaze: Combine brown sugar, honey, orange juice, Dijon mustard, and spices to make a sweet and tangy glaze. You can add pineapple juice or maple syrup for a different flavor profile.
- Glaze the ham: Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C). Place the ham in a roasting pan and brush the glaze evenly over the ham, ensuring it covers the scored areas. Cover the ham loosely with foil.
- Bake the ham: Bake the ham for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature reaches 140°F (60°C). Baste the ham with the glaze every 20-30 minutes to keep it moist.
- Roast the sweet potatoes: While the ham is baking, prepare the sweet potatoes. Cut them into uniform pieces, toss them with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and roast them in the oven at 400°F (200°C) until tender and caramelized.
- Serve the ham: Remove the ham from the oven and let it rest for 15-20 minutes before carving. Transfer the ham to a serving platter and arrange the roasted sweet potatoes around it. Serve the remaining glaze alongside the ham.
Conclusion:
This glazed ham with sweet potatoes is a delectable main course perfect for special occasions or holiday meals. The tender and flavorful ham, complemented by the sweet and tangy glaze, makes for a satisfying dish. The roasted sweet potatoes add a delightful side dish that complements the ham's savory notes. With careful preparation and attention to detail, this recipe yields a visually appealing and delicious meal that will impress your guests and leave them wanting more.
