Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 13 by 9-inch glass baking dish with 2 teaspoons of the butter.
- In a large bowl, cream together the remaining stick of butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating after the addition of each. In a separate bowl or on a piece of parchment, sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Add to the wet ingredients, alternating with the sour cream and vanilla. Fold in the apples. Pour into the prepared baking dish, spreading out to the edges.
- To make the topping, in a bowl, combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter, and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the topping over the cake and bake until golden brown and set, 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes.
- To make the glaze, in a bowl, combine the sugar, vanilla, and water and mix until smooth. Drizzle the cake with the glaze and let harden slightly. Serve warm.
GLAZED APPLE LATTICE COFFEE CAKE
This is from Bon Appétit's October 2007 issue. I made this for a tea party, everyone loved it. Don't let the long list fool you, it's really not that complicated to make and it turns out beautiful--it will really impress your friends. Hint: you will need to let the dough rise, plan to make this a day ahead, or plan other activities to do in the house while it rises.

Tips:
- For a crispier topping, use cold butter when making the crumb topping.
- If you don't have a pastry blender, you can use two forks to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Be sure to chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out. This will help to prevent the dough from becoming too sticky.
- If the dough is too sticky to handle, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time, until it is no longer sticky.
- When making the lattice top, be sure to weave the dough strips over and under each other in a crisscross pattern.
- Brush the top of the coffee cake with melted butter before baking. This will help to give it a golden brown color.
- Serve the coffee cake warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream.

This glazed apple lattice coffee cake is a delicious and easy-to-make treat that is perfect for any occasion.
