CONTEST-WINNING GERMAN PIZZA

Contest-Winning German Pizza image

Meet the Cook: Most of our family lives in Pennsylvania. They visit us often, and I like to serve this simple meal when they do. Even if it's just my husband, our 1-1/2-year-old and me around the table, German Pizza is a favorite. We have 280 sows and raise pigs to feeder size. There's plenty to do, and quick meals are appreciated. I do a good bit of canning and freezing. I also enjoy sewing. And I love to read - especially Country Woman! -Audrey Nolt, Versailles, Missouri

1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 medium onion, chopped
1/2 green pepper, diced
1 1/2 tsp salt, divided
1/2 tsp pepper
2 Tbsp butter
6 medium potatoes, peeled and finely shredded
3 eggs, beaten
1/3 c milk
2 c shredded cheddar or mozarella cheese

Steps:

  • 1. In a 12 inch skillet over medium heart, brown beef with onion, green pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and pepper. Remove meat mixture from skillet and drain fat. Reduce heat to low. Melt butter; spread potatoes over butter and sprinkle with remaining salt. Top with beef mixture. Combine eggs and milk; pour over all. Cook, covered, until potatoes are tender, about 30 minutes.
  • 2. Top with cheese; cover and heat until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes. Cut into wedges or squares to serve.

Tips:

  • To make the pizza dough, use active dry yeast. If you are using instant yeast, you can skip the step of proofing the yeast.
  • If you don't have a pizza stone, you can bake the pizza on a greased baking sheet.
  • For a crispy crust, bake the pizza at a high temperature (450-500°F) for a short amount of time.

  • Be creative with your toppings! You can use any combination of meats, vegetables, and cheeses that you like.
  • If you are using fresh tomatoes for your pizza sauce, be sure to remove the seeds and pulp before chopping them.
