Kinderpunsch (German Non-Alcoholic Punch) image

This classic non-alcoholic punch - or Kinderpunsch, in German - is the perfect holiday drink without alcohol. Made from fruity tea, apple juice, and fragrant spices like cinnamon and cloves, this "kid's punch" smells of citrus, isn't too sweet, and is always a hit during the holidays!

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 cups water
3 bags of red fruit tea
1 cup apple juice
2 cinnamon sticks
5 cloves
1 lemon (organic)
1 orange (organic)
1 tablespoon sugar (more to taste)

Steps:

  • Start by bringing the water to a boil - either in a medium-sized pot on the stove or in an electric kettle. Add three tea bags to the hot water. Let the tea steep from the recommended time (usually 5-8 minutes).
  • In the meantime, wash your organic orange and lemon and cut them into slices. In case you can't find organic lemons or oranges, you can also remove the peel first.
  • Once the tea is done steeping, remove the tea bags (and add the tea to the pot if you haven't yet). Then add the apple juice, cinnamon sticks, cloves, lemon slices, orange slices, and sugar into the pot as well and give everything a stir.
  • Cover the pot with a lid and heat the mixture on low heat for around 15 minutes. The mixture should not start boiling - it's only supposed to stay hot as the flavors mingle in the pot.
  • Taste the Kinderpunsch, add more sugar to taste, and then strain the drink to capture all the cloves and fruit slices. Serve the drink hot! You can garnish the Kinderpunsch with orange/lemon slices and/or cinnamon sticks before serving.

CRANACHAN

A Scottish desert traditionally made with cream, oats and whiskey. My recipe is alcohol free, but alternatively you can substitute the vanilla for 2 tablespoons of whiskey. This recipe makes quite a large portion, but a great way to make it serve more people is to layer with vanilla ice cream in the glass.

GERMAN ERDBEER BOWLE (STRAWBERRY WINE PUNCH)

German Erdbeer Bowle (Strawberry Wine Punch) image

Germans often serve a delicious Bowle at summer parties. There are many, many variations on a bowle, here is but one variation I found in a special summer issue of Kreativ Kuche magazine. I have translated this directly from the German. I recommend trying a German Riesling with this, but any white wine you prefer will do just as nicely. When serving Bowle, your German host usually will provide small picks along with your punch glass - the picks are for stabbing the wine soaked berries floating in your glass so you can eat them. The berries are, in my opinion, the best part! Plan to start this just a few hours before your guests arrive as this does not keep.

Time 3h

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 kg fresh strawberries
100 g powdered sugar
1/2 bunch lemon balm leaves (or lemon rind, see note in instructions)
4 (3/4 liter) bottles white wine
1 (3/4 liter) bottle champagne

Steps:

  • 2-3 hours before your guests arrive, wash the strawberries, drain well and pat dry.
  • Halve the berries, then place them in the bottom of large punch bowl or glass pitcher.
  • Sprinkle the powdered sugar over them.
  • Rinse the lemon balm leaves and shake them dry.
  • Pluck the leaves from their stems and add them to the berries.
  • Pour one bottle of wine over the berry mixture, cover, and cool in the fridge.
  • When the guests have arrived, add the remaining wine and the champagne.
  • Lemon balm is an herb in the mint family common in Europe; if unavailable then use a vegetable peeler to cut about 5-6 long narrow curls of lemon rind in place of the balm (remove before serving).

Tips:

  • To easily peel the oranges and clementines, use a paring knife to score the zest in a spiral pattern. Then, simply peel off the zest in one piece.
  • If you don't have a citrus press, you can use a juicer or a blender to extract the juice from the oranges and clementines.
  • Be careful not to over-boil the sugar syrup. Once it reaches a boil, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly before adding it to the punch.
  • If you want a non-alcoholic version of this punch, simply omit the sparkling wine.
  • Garnish the punch with orange slices or clementine wedges and a sprig of mint for a festive touch.

Conclusion:

This Kinder Mandarinen Bowle, or kiddie punch, is a delicious and refreshing non-alcoholic beverage that is perfect for parties and celebrations. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. For a more flavorful punch, use freshly squeezed orange and clementine juice. You can also add other fruits to the punch, such as strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries. This punch is sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike!
