Categories     Other Breakfast

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 c milk
3 large eggs
1 Tbsp grated lemon rind
8 slice french bread, thick
1 c bread crumbs
2 large tart apples, peeled, cored, sliced
2 c water
1 Tbsp lemon juice
3 sliced smoked bratwurst links (8 ounces)
1/4 c minced onion
8 tsp sugar cinnamon mixture
maple syrup

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 425.
  • 2. Whisk together milk, egg yolks and lemon rind.
  • 3. Soak bread slices in egg mixture until saturated.
  • 4. Whisk egg whites until frothy.
  • 5. Dip soaked bread in whites and then dredge in bread crumbs.
  • 6. Arrange on greased cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes.
  • 7. Remove, turn over and return to oven for 10 minutes longer.
  • 8. While toast is baking, place apple slices in small saucepan with the 2 cups water and lemon juice.
  • 9. Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
  • 10. Saute bratwurst and onions together until crispy brown.
  • 11. To serve, sprinkle toast with sugar/cinnamon mixture, cover with cooked, drained apple slices, sauteed bratwurst and onions.
  • 12. Serve with maple syrup.

Tips:

  • Use stale bread: Stale bread absorbs the egg mixture better and results in a crispier, more flavorful French toast.
  • Slice the bread evenly: This will help the French toast cook evenly.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: Cook the French toast in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan and steaming the bread instead of browning it.
  • Use a non-stick skillet: This will help prevent the French toast from sticking to the pan.
  • Cook the French toast over medium heat: This will help prevent the bread from burning.
  • Flip the French toast only once: Flipping the French toast too often can break it up.
  • Serve the French toast immediately: French toast is best served hot and fresh out of the pan.

Conclusion:

German French toast is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. With its crispy exterior and fluffy interior, German French toast is a surefire hit with people of all ages. Whether you serve it with traditional toppings like butter and syrup or get creative with your favorite fruits, nuts, and spices, German French toast is a meal that you'll love.
