½ cup hot water
4 (1 ounce) squares German baking chocolate, melted
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups white sugar
1 cup shortening
4 eggs, separated
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 ½ cups white sugar
4 eggs, lightly beaten

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • Heat water in a small saucepan until simmering. Place chocolate in a bowl set over, but not touching, the water. Stir chocolate frequently until melted, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and discard water.
