Tips:

  • For the smoothest mashed potatoes, use a potato ricer or food mill to mash them.
  • If you don't have a potato ricer or food mill, you can also mash the potatoes with a potato masher, but be sure to do it thoroughly to avoid any lumps.
  • Use Yukon Gold or russet potatoes for the best results. These potatoes have a high starch content, which makes them creamy and fluffy when mashed.
  • Don't overcook the potatoes. Overcooked potatoes will be watery and less flavorful.
  • To make sure the potatoes are cooked through, insert a fork or knife into the center of the potato. If it goes in easily, the potatoes are done.
  • Drain the potatoes well before mashing them. This will help to prevent the potatoes from being watery.
  • Add the butter, milk, and garlic to the potatoes while they are still hot. This will help the ingredients to blend together smoothly.
  • Season the potatoes with salt and pepper to taste. You can also add other herbs and spices, such as parsley, thyme, or rosemary.
  • Serve the mashed potatoes immediately, or keep them warm in a slow cooker until ready to serve.
